Chandigarh Nov 19 PTI Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modis announcement of repealing farm laws as much delayed but welcome step and also promised to construct a memorial in the name of farmers agitation in the state Modi on Friday announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws which were at the centre of protests by farmers for the past year Channi said had Modi taken this decision much earlier several precious lives would have been saved Blaming the Centre for thrusting these black farm laws arbitrarily on the farmers Channi said The BJP-led central government should admit on record to have made an Himalayan blunder in bringing these bills for which it hardly bothered to even relent for the past one and half years Farmer leaders claimed that nearly 700 farmers lost their lives during the agitation against the Centres farm laws The chief minister said that now when the prime minister has announced to withdraw these draconian farm laws he should compensate the farmers adequately for the humongous losses of life and property suffered by them Likewise he also sought compensation for the state on account of financial and property losses during the Kisan Morcha It is a victory of farmers agitation said Channi while referring to Modis statement Channi also sought enactment of a law to guarantee the minimum support price for crops He said the state government has been giving jobs to the victim families of farmers besides financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the farmers who sacrificed lives during the agitation He also said a memorial in the name of farmers agitation will be set up in Punjab After Independence if there was any big struggle it was this which strengthened the democratic system in the country he said Channi also demanded that the Centre withdraw the notification which increased the BSF jurisdiction from 15 km to 50 Slamming Akali and the BJP leadership over the farm laws the chief minister asked them with which face they will go to the people Channi alleged that the nexus of the Akali-BJP and even former chief minister Amarinder Singh made all out efforts to weaken the farm movement but in the end its victory of good over evil He said his government has been opposing these laws tooth and nail from day one Earlier in the day Channi in a tweet said it was a victory of the longest peaceful struggle of farmers Decision to repeal 3 black farm laws is victory of longest peaceful peoples struggle that was started by farmers in Punjab My salute to the Annadata said Channi in a tweet PTI CHS VSD CK

Bengaluru Sep 27 PTI The Bharat Bandh called by farmer unions on Monday to protest the Centres three farm laws did not have any major impact on normal life in Karnataka with all businesses and establishments functioning normally and transport services available However protest by farmers and attempts by them to organise a Rasta Roko on major national and state highways during the dawn-to-dusk bandh led to disruption in vehicular movement in several parts of the state especially in Bengaluru Farmers and Kannada organisations held rallies from multiple points around Bengaluru K R Puram Mysuru Road Maurya Circle and converged at Town Hall and then proceeded to a protest rally at Freedom Park Many pro-Kannada organistions and trade unions among others took part in the protest Several farmers leaders and protesters including Kuruburu Shantakumar were detained by police Similar protests by farmers by burning tyres and effigies have been reported from different parts of the state There are reports about protesters in some parts of the state forcing shopkeepers and business to down shutters but were stopped by police Claiming that the bandh according to them has been successful Farmer leader Kodihalli Chandrashekar said though the government ensured that buses and public transport operated to make the bandh unsuccessful people have stayed back at home and have expressed their support to their cause Bandh was successful in several districts as people have come on streets and protested on major roads and highways so we can say there has been a good response he said adding farmers organisations at Delhi together will decide on future course of action and how to take it forward Meanwhile earlier in the day speaking to reporters in Hubbali Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had appealed to farmer unions not to cause inconvenience to the public who are just recovering from the impact of COVID-19 and asked them to express their difference in any other form People have just started recovering from COVID and are indulging in businesses and other financial activities people should not face any trouble againI have appealed to the protesters not to cause inconvenience to people and cooperate he said appealing to protesters to express their differences in any other forms but not to cause inconvenience to the public through bandhPolice had had taken elaborate security measures to maintain peace and order in the wake of Bharat Bandh Deputy Commissioner of Police Bengaluru North Dharmendra Kumar Meena sustained injury after a SUV ran over on his leg during the Bandh bandobast duty in Gorguntepalya sources said The DCP was given first-aid and after some time he resumed duty Police however seized the car and detained the driver With several organisations only extending moral support for the bandh it did not have any major impact on normal life in the city and other parts of the state police sources said Citing losses due to COVID pandemic and its induced lockdown public transport KSRTC and BMTC employees unions hotel owners association lorry autorickshaw and taxi owners unions had said they support the protest but will continue to operate Metro services are operating as usual besides restaurants and eateries The Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka KAMS and association of private schools in the state had said schools will remain open and they will extend only moral support to the bandh PTI KSU BN BN

New Delhi Sep 27 PTI Markets remained open and business activities were unaffected in the national capital though massive traffic snarls were witnessed in border areas due to road blockades by protesters and security checks by police during the Bharat Bandh on Monday called by farmers against the Centres three agri laws The auto and taxi unions as well as several traders bodies extended only in-principle support to the Bharat Bandh and did not join the strike saying their livelihood has already been hit hard due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown Parts of the national capital witnessed traffic snarls in morning hours as police closed some key roads to prevent any untoward incident during the bandh Commuters faced difficulty while crossing the city borders Thousands of cars were lined bumper-to-bumper along the Gurgaon-Delhi border on Monday morning as police personnel were checking vehicles entering the national capital and it took some hours before the traffic movement returned to normal The traffic on the DND flyover which connects to Uttar Pradesh was also affected The Ghazipur border was closed for vehicular movement for a few hours and the whole traffic was diverted to DND and Apsara border for Noida and Ghaziabad respectively There was chaos on one carriageway of the national highway coming from Ghazipur border to Sarai Kale Khan near Akshardham Mandir in the morning hours Farmer leader Yogendra Yadav apologised to those who were affected due to the blockade saying Please bear with us The Samyukta Kisan Morcha SKM a united forum of farmer unions protesting the three farm laws claimed its call for a Bharat Bandh received an unprecedented and historic response from more than 23 states and not a single untoward incident was reported from anywhere Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday requested the Centre to consider the demands of farmers protesting against the three farm laws saying it will not be bowing down before anyone if it does so We are celebrating the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh He made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom of the nation He did not fight for freedom for a day when farmers have to sit on the streets and protest for a year to get their demands considered he said Meanwhile a section of trade unions and civil society groups held a protest at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with farmers The protesters held banners of Long Live Farmers Unity and demanded the repeal of the agri laws and equal opportunities for all In view of farmers Bharat Bandh the Delhi Police increased security checks at its border points which led to the slowing down of traffic and it informed commuters about road closures and traffic snarls on Twitter According to police roads around the historic Red Fort which witnessed violent clashes during a farmers tractor rally on January 26 as well as the dual carriageway at the Ghazipur border were closed for traffic In the evening hours these road stretches were opened for traffic movement A traffic jam was witnessed at the Kalindi Kunj flyover while it was moving slowly on the DND flyway a senior police officer said About 50 trains were affected due to the Bharat Bandh More than 20 locations had been blocked in Delhi Ambala and Firozpur divisions About 50 trains were affected due to this All train movement is normal since 430 PM a spokesperson for the Northern Railway said However autorickshaws and taxis plied normally and shops were open in the city Previously also we had supported Bharat Bandh by the farmers but continued to ply our autos and taxis This time also we are in support of genuine farmers but we are not on strike because our members are in deep distress due to shrinking earnings in pandemic times said Rajender Soni the general secretary of the Delhi Auto Taxi Union The Sarvoday Driver Association of Delhi representing many drivers of cab aggregator platforms also supported the farmers but did not join the strike We are in support of the farmers but our work was affected due to the pandemic and we cannot afford to go in their support by striking said Kamaljeet Gill president of the Association Other auto and taxi unions expressed the same sentiment According to the Azadpur Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee said that supply was unaffected as trucks transporting fruits and vegetables usually reach the Mandis a day in advance The next arrival would be on Monday night Markets and shops were open as farmers have not contacted our associations for any strike said Brijesh Goyal chairman of the Chamber of Trade and IndustryCTI Also the festival season is approaching and it is time for traders to recover some of the losses they faced due to the pandemic and lockdown We do support the farmers and urge the
