Srinagar Oct 23 PTI Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday arrived here on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir his first since the revocation of Article 370 during which he will review the security situation in the valley Shah was received at the Srinagar airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha where other senior officials of the Jammu and Kashmir administration were also present officials said The Home Minister is scheduled to chair a high-level security review meeting later in the day and also flag off the inaugural Srinagar-Sharjah flight He is also likely to interact with members of a youth club here This is Shahs first visit to Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir state into two Union Territories on August 5 2019 Security was beefed up across Kashmir ahead of Shahs visit to the valley Additional deployment of security forces has been made across the valley the officials said They said the security apparatus has been beefed up especially in the city here Official sources said 50 companies of additional paramilitary forces are being inducted into the valley in the wake of the recent spate of civilian killings Bunkers manned by CRPF forces have come up in several areas of the city as well in other parts of the Kashmir valley the officials said PTI MIJ HDA

New Delhi Sep 26 PTI Union Home Minister Amit Shah Sunday reviewed the security situation and the implementation of development projects in Naxal-affected areas with six chief ministers and top officials of four states The chief ministers who attended the meeting were Naveen Patnaik Odisha K Chandrashekar Rao Telangana Nitish Kumar Bihar Shivraj Singh Chouhan Madhya Pradesh Uddhav Thackeray Maharashtra and Hemant Soren Jharkhand official sources saidThe chief ministers of West Bengal Chhattisgarh Andhra Pradesh and Kerala were also invited for the meeting However these four states were represented by either a state minister or top officialsThe home minister reviewed with the chief ministers and officials the security situation and ongoing operations against Maoists and development projects being carried out in Naxal-hit areas the sources saidShah took stock of the requirements of the states the strength of forces deployed to tackle the extremists development works like the construction of roads bridges school and health centres being carried out in Naxal-hit areasOdisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the Maoist problem has been reduced to only three districts in his state and the meeting discussed what is required to be done to reduce it furtherUnion ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw Giriraj Singh Arjun Munda and Nityanada Rai also attended the meetingUnion Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla Director of Intelligence Bureau Arvinda Kumar senior civil and police officers of Central and state governments also attended itAccording to the Union Home Ministry data Maoist violence has reduced considerably in the country and the menace is prevalent now in just about 45 districtsHowever a total 90 districts in the country are considered Maoist-affected and are covered under the Security Related Expenditure SRE Scheme of the ministryThe Naxal problem also called Left Wing Extremism LWE were reported in 61 districts in 2019 and in only about 45 districts in 2020About 380 security personnel 1000 civilians and 900 Naxals were killed in different violence in LWE affected areas since 2015 till 2020A total of about 4200 Naxals have also surrendered during the same period the data said PTI ACB TIR TIR

New Delhi Sep 20 PTI Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has authorised him to hold preliminary talks with the insurgent group ULFA After meeting Shah here tonight Sarma also said that he is partly involved in the ongoing peace process with the NSCN-IM but was not officially holding any negotiation with the Naga rebel group I have discussed with the home minister on the issue of holding peace talks with the ULFA He has authorised me to initiate the preliminary talks with the ULFA he told reporters here The chief minister also said that if things move in a proper direction the central government may get involved in the peace parleys with the ULFA at a later stage Asked about his role in the dialogue with the NSCN-IM Sarma said he was partly involved in it but never officially engaged in the peace talks with the Naga group As convenor of the NEDA I have sometimes talked to some political parties in Nagaland in the past he said Sarma is the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance NEDA the Northeast version of the NDA where major parties of the region are constituents The chief minister said he would travel to Nagaland on Tuesday as convenor of the NEDA to assess the political situation of the state after opposition parties too became part of the government Referring to the National Register of Citizens NRC he said both central and state governments are on the same page in seeking a review of the NRC in Assam However a decision in this regard will be taken only by the Supreme Court as the NRC was prepared under the direct supervision of the apex court Replying to another question Sarma said he has no plans to effect a reshuffle in his ministry as of now Sarma assumed charge as Assam chief minister on May 10 PTI ACB RT RT
