New Delhi (India), December 14 (ANI/PNN): Assam Rifles as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the Government of India Initiatives of 'Khelo India Abhiyan' and 'Fit India Movement', organised the first ever Assam Rifles annual football tournament across the football loving states of the North East.
The NGT initiated this matter after taking note of a media report titled "Stone quarry collapses in Mizoram, 12 feared dead", and to the effect that as a consequence of the collapse of slope in Hnahthial District, Mizoram, 12 people, who were the workers engaged by a private firm, died. The incident was reported on November 14.
Areca nuts are being smuggled from Myanmar to India for long. Six Mizoram districts - Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Serchhip, Hnahthial and Saitual- share about 510-km long international border with Myanmar. This border is being used for smuggling areca nuts - also know as betel nuts - from Myanmar to India.
After the demand of some NGOs of the state, the Mizoram government has also shown its position in favour of giving refugee status to 30,000 Myanmar nationals who are currently taking shelter in various parts of Mizoram following the military coup in their country in February last year.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that she was "depressed" after knowing about the deaths of workers under the debris of the stone quarry which collapsed at Maudarh village in Mizoram's Hnahthial district on Monday.
The Prime Minister's office (PMO) tweeted, "My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones due to the tragic stone quarry collapse in Mizoram. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh would be given from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000."
