New Delhi [India], January 15 (ANI): Most of the Omicron variant infected patients of COVID-19 during the last week of December 2021 had no travel history which indicates that there was eventual community transmission, according to the study conducted by the Department of Clinical Virology, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi.

New Delhi Dec 24 PTI Multi-vitamins and paracetamol were the only treatment provided to Omicron patients at Delhis Lok Nayak hospital so far doctors said on FridayThe LNJP Hospital which is the Delhi governments largest healthcare facility has reported 40 cases of the new coronavirus variant of concern till now Nineteen of these patients have already been dischargedA senior doctor at the hospital said around 90 per cent of the patients are asymptotic and the rest showed mild symptoms like sore throat low-grade fever and body acheThe treatment included only multi-vitamins and paracetamol tablets We didnt feel the need to give them any other medicine he saidThe doctor said most of the patients are those who tested COVID-19 positive at the airport upon arrival from foreign countries Most of them are fully vaccinated and three-four have even taken booster shots he addedThe patients included an MP of an African country a member of a royal family from a north Indian state and family members of bureaucrats a source saidAccording to data from the Union Health Ministry Delhi has logged 67 Omicron cases so far of which 23 have been dischargedBesides the LNJP Hospital Sir Ganga Ram City Hospital Max Hospital Saket Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj and Batra Hospital in Tughlakabad have also set up facilities for treating and isolating suspected cases of Omicron following orders from the city governmentGenome sequencing of samples of all COVID-19-infected people in Delhi is being conducted since Wednesday December 22 to ascertain if the new Omicron variant has spread in the communityThe Delhi government-run labs at the Lok Nayak hospital and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences can sequence 100 samples each day Two Centre-run labs in Delhi can sequence 200-300 samples a day according to city Health Minister Satyendar JainAnticipating a surge in Covid cases due to the fast-spreading Omicron variant Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said his government has made preparations to handle one lakh patients and conduct three lakh tests daily and to ensure availability of enough manpower medicines and oxygenKejriwal stressed that the latest variant of the coronavirus spreads rapidly and claimed that it causes very mild infection fewer hospitalisations and deathsTherefore the government has been focusing on strengthening its home-isolation module and directions have been issued to hire agencies for treating patients at their homes he said PTI GVS IJT

New Delhi Dec 20 PTI Six more cases of the Omicron variant of Covid have been detected in Delhi taking the total number of people testing positive for the latest variant of the coronavirus here to 28 sources said on MondayAt least 12 patients have been discharged they saidAmid the Omicron scare and the growing number of coronavirus cases in Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday afternoon said all samples that test positive for the infection will now be sent for genome sequencingThe decision was taken at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority DDMA in which the Omicron situation including its possible effects and steps to deal with it was discussed according to the chief ministerEarlier in the day a source said Two more cases of Omicron have been detected in Delhi Their samples sent for genome sequencing earlier have come out positive One has come from the UK while the other from Ghana aged 47 and 22 respectively The tally has grown to 24 and 12 patients have been discharged they had said in the afternoonThese two patients are admitted to the LNJP Hospital the sources said adding most of the patients are asymptomaticLater in the evening another source said four more cases of the Omicron variant of Covid have been detected here taking the tally further to 28Meanwhile soon after the chief ministers press briefing the authorities at two genome sequencing laboratories in Delhi said they have the capacity to handle a higher number of samples for detection of the Omicron variantOn Monday 93 fresh COVID-19 cases were logged in the city with a positivity rate of 020 per cent as per the latest health bulletinThe national capital had recorded 85 cases on Thursday with a positivity rate of 015 per cent On Sunday it jumped to 107 the highest single-day rise since June 27 while one death was also recorded and the positivity rate stood at 017 per cent according to official dataTwo laboratories one each at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences ILBS and the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash LNJP Hospital run under the Delhi government have the genome sequencing facility availableWe have a capacity to handle 1000 samples per week Though the daily cases have increased in the last couple of days only about the capacity of 500 samples per week is being used So at present we have sufficient capacity and as per the need we will double it a source told PTIDelhis first case of the Omicron variant -- a 37-year-old man from Ranchi -- was detected on December 5 He has been dischargedAmid a jump in cases of Omicron reported in Delhi doctors havewarned that people should avoid all kinds of gatherings as this is a highly transmissible variant and follow Covid-appropriate behaviours else the situation may worsen PTI KND GVS IJT
