Kolkata Mar 28 PTI A major fire broke out at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology IICB one of the oldest biomedical laboratories in the country here on Monday a fire official said No casualty was reported in the blaze which has been brought under control the official said A total of 12 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire in the institute a wing of the Council of Scientific Industrial Research CSIR situated close to Jadavpur University in the southern part of the city The fire broke out at around 1230 PM from a laboratory of the IICB in the southern part of the citys Jadavpur area The cause of the fire will be probed the official added The IICB was established in 1935 as the first non-official centre in India for biomedical research and was included within the aegis of CSIR in 1956 The institute is engaged in research on diseases of national importance and biological problems of global interest PTI SCH NN NN
Kolkata Dec 23 PTI An association of Jadavpur University professors on Thursday wrote to West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Education Minister Bratya Basu requesting them to take immediate steps to fill up vacant posts of dean in arts and engineering faculties of the institute The Jadavpur University Teachers Association also pointed out that absence of chancellors nominees for Comparative Literature and Bengali departments is impeding academic activities There is no permanent dean either in the faculty of Arts or in the faculty of Engineering and Technology for a long time This seriously hampers various academic and administrative activities and functioning the JUTA said in the letters sent separately to Basu and Dhankhar the chancellor of the institute After the amendment of the Jadavpur University Act1981 in 2011 and 2012 the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies Law and Management was created and students have been admitted to various courses but the FISLM cannot award degrees as the universitys statutes have still not been amended JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Ray said This is likely to cause considerable difficulties for students admitted to various courses of study under this faculty Such students may face problems with their degrees in future In such a situation we request you to either approve the amended statutes or close down this faculty We cannot keep on playing with our students future in this manner for an indefinite period of time Ray said in the letters PTI SUS BDC BDC

Kolkata Oct 21 PTI Twenty-nine scientists of Jadavpur University in Kolkata have found a place in the database compiled by Stanford University that ranks the top two per cent of scientists worldwide based on their research publications An official of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association claimed the number of scientists from JU is the highest in the list among all the universities of the country This was followed by BHU 24 University of Hyderabad 22 and University of Delhi 18 Across the country 2049 names from various universities and institutes have made it to the list Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das told PTI it was a matter of pride for the country and West Bengal in particular that so many teachers of the varsity have been included in the prestigious database Jadavpur University scientists have won this honour even though the university is not privileged to get adequate central funds The Centre should consider how JU is pursuing scientific research with its limited financial resources being a state university and allocate more funds to it Das said The database which has taken into consideration research publications up to 2020 end includes the top two per cent of scientists of the world based on percentile score Jadavpur University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Chiranjib Bhattacharya told PTI it is a confirmation of the high academic standard of our faculty Jadavpur University is in the same bracket as IIT Kharagpur and other leading institutions and our teachers and scientists are undertaking important works in the domain of scientific research which is acclaimed all over the world As many as 114 scientists of Indian Institute of Science IISc Bangalore have made it to the list ranking it first among the higher educational institutes in the country PTI SUS MM MM
Kolkata Aug 31 PTI Authorities of Jadavpur University have decided to form a committee to suggest Covid safety measures on the campus as the West Bengal government was mulling to reopen educational institutes after the Durga Puja vacation later this year a varsity official said on Tuesday A panel comprising representatives of faculties non-teaching staff and students is being set up to deliberate on the issue and recommend possible steps so that physical classes can be held adhering to COVID guidelines when the state government will give its nod to resume on-campus activities he said The decision to form a committee was taken at an executive council meeting of the university We are now discussing the nitty-gritty and will take a call on reopening only when the state higher education department will issue necessary instructions No one knows what will be the COVID situation in October the senior varsity official told PTI Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier this month said her government was weighing options for reopening schools and colleges on alternate days after the Durga Puja vacation However nothing has been finalised just yet she had told reporters Educational institutes have been closed in the state since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March last year Jadavpur University Teachers Association General Secretary Partha Pratim Roy said a similar committee was formed last year and wondered over the need for constituting another panel A similar exercise was undertaken about a year back but the pandemic situation continued and the government didnt give its nod to the educational institutions to reopen We will cooperate but forming another panel will not change the ground situation and what the government thinks What experts will recommend to the state administration is important he added PTI SUS BDC BDC
