Jammu Dec 28 PTI Two women hailing from Punjab were arrested Tuesday on the charges of drug peddling after about 12 grams of heroin was seized from their possession in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir police said Karamjeet Kour of Gurdaspur and Neha of Jalandhar were noticed moving suspiciously near Chak Drab Khan area During their search about six grams each of heroin was found in their possession a police official said He said the women were living as tenants in Kullian village of Kathua The official said they were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances NDPS Act Further investigation is on he added PTI TAS AB AQS AQS

Jammu Dec 28 PTI A former government official was sentenced to three years in jail by a special court on Tuesday in a disproportionate assets case an official said Two other accused in the case filed in 2008 were acquitted by the court for want of sufficient evidence a spokesperson of the Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB said in a statement He said special anti-corruption judge Ritesh Dubey convicted former tehsildar Janak Singh of Shastri Nagar area in Jammu for acquiring assets disproportionate to income and acquiring assets in benami transactions The court awarded three years simple imprisonment and one-year simple imprisonment for offences under the Public Men Public Servants Declaration of Assets Act and two years simple imprisonment for commission of offences under the Benami Transactions Prohibition Act to the former government official the spokesman said The case was registered against the revenue official on the basis of a verification conducted into the allegations that he had raised assets disproportionate to his known sources of income in the name of his family members and friends by indulging in corrupt practices during his service career the spokesman said He said the verification has found that the accused has constructed a double-storey residential house on a piece of land measuring more than two kanals at Shastri Nagar Jammu and has established a petrol pump at Greater Kailash in Jammu in the name of his family members Janak Singh was found to have resorted to acquisition of moveable and immovable properties in his name and in the name of his close relations in order to conceal his money the spokesman said PTI TAS AB SMN SMN

Jammu Dec 27 PTI Two persons were arrested and 400 kilograms of poppy was seized from a Punjab-bound truck in Jammu and Kashmirs Samba district on Monday police said Acting on a credible input about the smuggling of narcotics a police party intercepted a truck at Mansar checkpoint on Udhampur- Mansar-Samba road they said During its checking 40 boxes filled with poppy weighing about 400 kilograms were recovered police said adding the truck was going to Punjab from Kashmir Truck driver Farooq Ahmed Ganie and his associate Shabir Ahmed Dar both residents of Pulwama district were arrested they said adding the vehicle was seized A case has been registered at police station Samba and further investigation started police said PTI AB AQS AQS

Jammu Dec 26 PTI A major fire broke out in a makeshift market on the outskirts of the city causing damage to nearly a dozen shops and destroying property worth lakhs of rupees officials said Fire and Emergency services rushed half a dozen fire tenders and are trying to douse the leaping flames in Bagad Mandi in the Trikuta Nagar area they said An official of the fire and emergency services said the blaze was reported in the market with mostly shops made of wood and tin around 905 pm The firefighting operation is on and the details are awaited he said adding more fire tenders are being rushed to the scene to control the blaze The officials said nearly a dozen shops were damaged when last reports were received but there was no report of any casualty The cause of the fire was not known immediately they said PTI TAS AQS AQS
