New Delhi Jan 22 PTI A 32-bed Covid care centre will be set up on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus according to a circular issued by the varsity on Saturday The JNU Students Union JNUSU had been demanding for setting up the centre and had even written to the varsitys vice-chancellor over the issue earlier this month Officials from the university had said they were awaiting a response from the Delhi government Last week the Delhi High Court had pulled up the city government for inaction and lethargy in making operational a COVID-19 care centre on the JNU campus even though space has been earmarked for it All stakeholders of the university are hereby informed that in view of the third wave of Covid cases including Omicron variant and as a result of the efforts made by the JNU administration New Delhi district administration the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Health Family Welfare Department has issued an order to set up a 32 beds Covid Isolation Centre step-down isolation facility quarantine facility for JNU students campus residents at the Sabarmati Hostel-Dormitory of the University read the circular The centre is linked to the Delhi government-run Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital to provide adequate medical support in form of manpowerlogisticsconsumablesmedicines etc it said The District Magistrate New Delhi will ensure proper monitoring of the aforesaid Covid Isolation Centre and will ensure proper timely and adequate supply of logistics as mandated by the orders passed by the department it said The hostel currently does not have residents according to university officials In a related development the university will be organising a vaccination camp on January 24 25 and 26 at the Convention Centre for all students and serving employees and their dependents and all staff working under essential services of the university In the vaccination camp first and second doses of Covaxin Covishied will be given to the persons of the age group of 18 years and above and first dose of Covaxin will be given to those in the 15-18 age group The camp will be organized by the New Delhi district administration the varsity said PTI SLB CK

Kolkata Aug 31 PTI Expressing solidarity with students protesting near the residence of Viswa-Bharati Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty over expulsion of three peers JNU Students Union president Aishe Ghosh and SFIs West Bengal chief Srijon Bhattacharya on Tuesday joined the demonstration in Birbhum The student leaders said that the VC should immediately revoke the rustication order and change his anti-student undemocratic way of functioning or put in his papers as the agitation entered the fourth day Three students -- two of them from the economics department and one pursuing music -- were rusticated for three years on August 23 for disorderly conduct A university official said the students were given a chance to defend their case before the enquiry commissioner appointed by the university but they were unapologetic Ghosh a national-level SFI leader told reporters that she wanted to extend support to the three students who are staring at an uncertain future due to the draconian decision of the VC This cannot be allowed We are pledging full support to the students of Visva-Bharati In fact from JNU to Visva-Bharati whenever the VCs are appointees of the BJP government at the Centre there are attempts to crush liberal views impose one school of opinion Ghosh claimed She said it is for the students of the central university to decide what ways they will be adopting to take forward the protest but the SFI will continue to stand by them Bhattacharya on his part alleged that the decision by Visva-Bharati to temporarily suspend admission to UG and PG courses in the wake of the protest is aimed at showing the agitating students in a poor light In a notice on Monday the university had said that the admission process was being put on hold as the VC whose approval is routinely required is currently under siege A section of faculty members known to be close to the VC visited the site of the sit-in to broker peace between university authorities and students but all efforts failed as the demonstrators stuck to their demand for revocation of the expulsion order We came here on our own as stakeholders We dont represent university authorities but we are concerned about the turn of events We came here to see if talks can be initiated They are our children one of the faculty members told reporters PTI SUS RMS RMS

New Delhi Aug 30 PTI The Jawaharlal Nehru University JNU Executive Council will discuss granting approval to a course on counter-terrorism at its meeting on September 2 A section of JNU teachers and students has objected to the introduction of the course alleging it states that jihadi terrorism is the only form of fundamentalist-religious terrorism The course titled Counter Terrorism Asymmetric Conflicts and Strategies for Cooperation among Major Powers also asserts that Communist regimes in the Soviet Union and China were the state-sponsors of terrorism that influenced radical Islamic states according to them The course was approved by the Academic Council of the university earlier this month The course proposed to be offered to dual-degree engineering students will be optional JNU Teachers Association secretary Moushumi Basu said There is an EC meeting on September 2 and this will come up for approval A few years back they the university administration had tried to do the same and the Delhi Minorities Commission had objected to it and it was withdrawn Such a course should not be taught and should be withdrawn Its problematic She said the course gave a simplistic view on the topic According to her some members objected to the course in the Academic Council meeting but they were not allowed to articulate their views JNU Students Union general secretary Satish Chandra Yadav said Students want to return to the campus and the university should work on bringing students back Many students are dropping out The university should first think about more pressing issues rather than focus on bringing such courses PTI SLB SMN SMN
