Thane Mar 31 PTI The Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB has arrested a senior woman official of the MSEDCL in Navi Mumbai for allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 50000 bribe an official said on Thursday The accused Varsha Prabhakar Deshmukh was posted as the additional executive engineer in the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltds MSEDCL Airoli subdivision office in Navi Mumbai She was arrested by the Thane unit of the ACB on Wednesday The complainant in the case worked with an electrical company which had filed an application with the MSEDCL But the official demanded Rs 50000 for processing the application and allowing an increase in the power load ACBs deputy superintendent of police Maya More said The complainant approached the anti-graft agency whose officials laid a trap and nabbed Deshmukh while accepting the bribe amount she said An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against her at Rabale police station PTI COR NP NP

Thane Feb 18 PTI The police have arrested the husband of a Nepali singer for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 85 lakh in Ambernath town of Maharashtras Thane district an official said on Friday The police have apprehended Arvind Kumar the husband of Nepali singer Rabina Badi while a hunt has been launched for her senior inspector Madhukar Bhoge of Shivaji Nagar police station in Ambernath said An offence had been registered in August 2021 following a complaint of cheating lodged by a Nepali woman living in Ambernath he said The accused couple had allegedly cheated the victim Kalpana Magar of Rs 85 lakh by wooing her to sell her kidney to meet her financial needs the official said Magar whose husband is a security guard supports her family by working as a house help in the locality The victim had attended a programme of the accused singer in Nepal in 2019 and in 2020 she befriended her on Facebook he said When the victim informed the accused about her financial condition the latter offered to help her out and asked her to sell her kidney Badi also claimed that she had sold her kidney and received Rs 4 crore for it he said According to the police the accused asked the victim to deposit Rs 10 lakh first and then claimed that she will have to travel to a foreign country where her kidney will be removed and she would get Rs 4 crore The victim transferred Rs 850 lakh between May and December 2020 following which she realised that she had been cheated when the accused started giving her evasive replies about the process the official said Based on the complaint lodged by the woman at Ambernath police station the police recently nabbed the singers husband and further probe is underway to find out if more people are involved in the racket PTI COR ARU ARU

Thane Dec 22 PTI A 22-year-old woman who wanted to take a loan of Rs one lakh was allegedly cheated by two persons to the tune of over Rs 14 lakh by posing as executives of a finance company police said on Wednesday The victims father who was a business head with a reputed company in the city had deposited around Rs 18 lakh into her bank account after his retirement Out of this the woman had spent Rs 1 lakh for personal reasons which she wanted to replenish an official of Naupada police station said Therefore she decided to take a loan of that amount On July 24 she received a call from a man who posed as a representative of a private finance company and offered to provide loan to her When she agreed he asked her to make a payment of Rs 2600 as processing fees which she did he said Later despite providing the details the loan processing was not complete When she contacted another man told her that the previous agent was down with coronavirus infection and he would handle her case henceforth That man also told her that the loan needs to be reprocessed and asked her to transfer money on several occasions He also said that the payment would be refunded to her later the official said The amount that she lost this way was Rs 1447 lakh which she paid between July and September Later she realised that she has been cheated and then approached the police A case under IPC section 420 cheating has been registered against the accused who identified themselves as Raj Kunde and Anjuman Shau based on the complaint lodged by the woman on Monday PTI COR NP NP

Thane Dec 18 PTI Police have arrested a woman from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly stealing 910 grams of jewellery from a house in Ulhasnagar of Maharashtras Thane district where she had started working as a maid just a few days before it an official said on Saturday The accused woman identified as Narmada alias Asha Shoaib Khan 35 was arrested on Thursday and 247840 grams of the stolen valuables were recovered from her he said Days before the incident the woman had approached the family in Ulhasnagar and repeatedly requested the members to employ her as a maid police said The family had employed the woman although they did not have any details about her They had given her the job without the due diligence Just days after she joined she decamped with 910 grams of jewellery from their house when the family members had gone out for work senior inspector crime branch Anil Mangle said After receiving the complaint the crime branch launched a probe It was found that after committing the offence the woman kept changing her location he said The crime branch worked on several possibilities and sent teams to Uttar Pradesh Ahmedabad Nashik and Mumbai to trace her Finally we received a tip-off that she was hiding in Bulandshahr from where we nabbed her the official added During her interrogation the woman said that she had stolen valuables from at least a dozen houses in a similar fashion police said PTI COR NP NP

Thane Sep 28 PTI Police have arrested a womans sister and two other relatives for allegedly stealing Rs 1085 lakh cash from her house in Maharashtras Thane district an official said on Tuesday The incident took place on September 4 after the victim had sold her house and kept the cash at her present residence in Mumbra town here She lodged a police complaint alleging that some unidentified persons broke into her house and stole the money Mumbra police stations senior police inspector Madhukar Kad said The police on September 6 registered a case against unidentified persons under Indian Penal Code Sections 380 theft and 454 lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit an offence he said They checked the CCTV footage of the area and subsequently arrested one of the accused identified as the victims brother-in-law On the day of the incident the arrested accused had made a WhatsApp call to someone and later deleted the record from his mobile phone The police sent the phone for forensic testing which revealed that he had made the call to his wife who is the sister of the complainant the official said After further probe into the case the police on September 22 arrested the complainants sister and the next day nabbed her uncle for their involvement in the theft he said They also recovered Rs 935 lakh out of the stolen cash from the accused he added PTI COR GK GK
