Mirabai can deliver in Paris Games but has to compete in selective events Weightlifting HPD

21-Jan-2022
New Delhi Jan 21 PTI Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu can deliver again at the 2024 Paris Games but she will have to be selective in her competitions while preparing for the global showpiece Indias newly-appointed weightlifting High Performance Director Aveenash Pandoo said on Friday The Mauritian who was appointed Indias first High Performance Director HPD for weightlifting until the 2024 Paris Olympics also outlined his roadmap Going forward Mirabai will have to be very selective while choosing competitions because there is also another three years adding on to her age Pandoo said during a virtual press conference facilitated by Sports Authority of India Its not easy Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia is a four-time Olympic medallist he has proved it can be done with a very selective and intelligent way of preparing He said Chanus coach Vijay Sharma will be able to put together a plan in that regard They have a very good relationship I fully trust it will happen So yes Im confident Mirabai will further deliver in Paris Olympics Pandoo said The 46-year-old said his main focus will be towards developing youth and junior programmes My clear roadmap that has been put to me by SAI will be to get involved in youth and junior development programmes Pandoo who played a major role in helping two weightlifters win medals in the 2016 Rio Olympics during his tenure as HPD in Indonesia said talent development identification will be his initial focus adding that he will take up an athlete-centric approach I intend to look very strongly into a proper roadmap for Indian weightlifting with regards to talent identification programme and how we can improve on that He will look after the coaching education programme while also conducting a series of webinars or seminars with coaches and athletes I dont think India lacks equipment or coaches We have to look at the coaching education This is my next pillar I will be very strongly leading that coaching education programme Talking about the trend of athletes competing in selective tournaments Pandoo said the the juniors should compete more regularly High level athletes can be selective on their competitions But there are also qualification competitions where the athletes have to participate So coaches have to take that into account But if we are talking about the youth and junior programme we have to compete more regularly so that the athletes can see where they are improving However with the COVID-19 affecting the domestic and international calendar Pandoo said coaches will need to get innovative in order to keep the athletes motivated This is actually a new life that we have now to get used to it This is where the coaches creative instinct have to come in to make these kind of areas happen where the athletes know how to push themselves We can have some form of online competition maybe email competitions between provinces where the athletes can foster that development of competing Weightlifting has been marred by escalating number of doping cases Asked if the sport can exist without doping Pandoo said Yes Its simple with a good development programme a good education programme to the athletes federation coaches and those involved with the sport yes it is very possible China is the powerhouse in the sport and Pandoo believes India too can replicate their neighbours success by asking the right questions and taking corrective measures They China have a very big talent pool They have huge funding and do extensive research as well Maybe if we India can start putting something on a smaller scale we can develop India is not a small population So why are we having for example the same athletes in the team for more than 10 years Are we doing enough in terms of talent RD programme and talent development Maybe these are the questions we will have to ask and start looking at how we can better develop the talent pool for India PTI APA PDS PDS

Mirabai Chanu lifts Indian spirits with Tokyo silver but weightlifting faces uncertain Olympic future

27-Dec-2021
New Delhi Dec 27 PTI Mirabai Chanus heartwarming tale of redemption at the Tokyo Olympics was the defining moment for Indian weightlifting in a reasonably successful 2021 but the sport itself faced an uncertain future globally with long-standing governance and doping-related problems threatening its place in the Olympics going forward Chanu a former world champion had left the 2016 Rio Olympics in tears after failing to log a legitimate lift but five years on she displayed the brilliant composure in Tokyo for a historic silver medal to bury the ghosts of the past This despite the fact that her plans took a hit when the Olympics were postponed by a year leading to her schedule going haywire amid the COVID-19 pandemic It was a confusing period filled with anxiety but then she knew how to pull herself out of the abyss having done that remarkably well after Rio She a new world record in the clean and jerk section and also bettered her own national record en route winning her first Asian Championship medal a bronze in April The 27-year-old Indian lifted 86kg in snatch and a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk for a total of 205kg getting the better of both her Chinese opponents who won the gold and silver The year only got better for Chanu who now has medals in all big tournaments barring the Asian Games With a new world record in her kitty and an imbalance issue sorted Chanu was one of Indias brightest medal hopes heading into the Olympics and she lived up to that top billing She opened the countrys on the opening day an unprecedented feat that sent the entire nation into a frenzy Sporting Olympic-ring-shaped earrings gifted to her by her mother before the 2016 Rio Games the diminutive Iron lady from Manipur capitalised on the not-so-competitive field and clinched the 49kg category silver medal in Tokyo Born in a poor family in Nongpok Kakching village about 20 kilometres from Imphal Chanu whose childhood was spent cutting and collecting wood from the nearby hills and fetching water from nearby ponds in milk powder cans lifted a total of 202kg 87kg115kg It was not her personal best but it was enough to end Indias over two-decade-longwait for a weightlifting medalat the Olympics Karnam Malleswari was the first to do that with a bronze in the Sydney games in 2000 With that massive achievement Chanus year ended as the Manipuri pulled out of the World Championship and Commonwealth Championships which were held simultaneously While Chanu was the lone ranger for India in weightlifting at the Olympics Jeremy Lalrinnunga touted as the one for the future in the sport endured a bittersweet year He missed out on an Olympic spot in the 67kg category due to a knee injury suffered during the Asian Championships which also compromised his performance at the junior world championships a month later However the teenager from Mizoram who is a 2018 Youth Olympics champion was able to end the year with a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships earlier this month With a top of the podium finish at the event Jeremy also booked a spot for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games as did Achinta Sheuli 73kg who also bagged a silver medal at the junior world championships in May Ajay Singh 81kg and Purnima Pandey 87kg too won gold medals at the event The countrys lifters despite capping off the year by winning 18 medals in the Commonwealth Championships and smashing several national records werent competitive at the Worlds which was pretty much expected In the global scheme of things as lifters around the world continued to harbour dreams of participating in the Olympics the fate of the sport at future Games hung in balance Dismayed by decades of rampant doping bribery vote-rigging and corruption at weightliftings highest levels the International Olympic Committee IOC finally took action and threatened to drop the sport from the Olympic roster Earlier this month the International Weightlifting Federation IWF was described as a problem due to corruption and history of doping by IOC president Thomas Bach The IWF and its future leadership must demonstrate its transition towards compliance and effective change of culture Furthermore they must successfully address the historical incidence of doping in the sport and ensure the integrity robustness and full independence of its anti-doping programme Bach said Weightlifting was left off the initial list for the 2028 Los Angeles Games which will be placed before the IOC members for approval in February Since then the IWF has been busy repairing its tarnished image but only time will tell whether it would be able to secure a future for the sport which has seen its quota of athletes come down from 260 at the the Rio Olympics to 120 at the 2024 Paris Games PTI APA PM PM
