New Delhi Feb 22 PTI Many Delhi University colleges are holding classes on open grounds and also in batches to ensure physical distancing as a majority of the students have started attending physical lectures after the varsity reopened following a two-year Covid-enforced hiatusThe colleges are also providing regular counselling to students who are facing psychological issues to help them adjust to the new environmentThe Delhi University reopened last Thursday and the students are turning up in good numbers The colleges are expecting more students to arrive in the coming daysHowever the return of a large number of students poses problems in ensuring adherence to the Covid protocols Moreover cases of physiological issues have risen among students according to college principalsWith this the colleges are scrambling to ensure that quality education is provided to the students and at the same time their health is not compromised We are trying to follow all Covid protocols As students are coming in large numbers it is difficult to maintain social distancing There is also a problem of overcrowding Social distancing is impossible but we have strict compliance of wearing of masks and other protocols Hindu College Principal Anju Shrivastava told PTIAs colleges are opening after a two-year lull Shrivastava is of the view that it will take time for things to settle downWe still have students coming up It will take time to open completely and we are working on that We hope that we get settled very soon We need to prioritise everything -- from classes to the cafeteria to the hostel All the things are to be taken into consideration she notedMeanwhile Ramjas College principal Manoj Khanna noted that the anxiety level is very high among studentsSuddenly psychological issues among students have risen The anxiety level in students is very high among students We refer them to counsellors he saidHe asserted that it is quite difficult to maintain social distancing inside the campusOur infrastructure facilities are not such that we can adjust all students so we are taking classes in batches We cannot put students in isolation Though we try to maintain social distancing in classes but students meet up outside and it is very difficult to force them to maintain social distancing he addedThe colleges have said they are ensuring that proper counselling is provided to the students Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College principal Jaswinder Singh informed said We have trained counsellors We are providing counselling to students The counsellor comes twice every week But if there are urgent cases we provide telephone details of the counsellor to the studentsTo avoid overcrowding some teachers are also taking classes on open grounds We have given the liberty to sit outside to hold classes in open Several teachers are taking classes in open said the Hindu college principal Miranda House principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda said the priority is to provide students a complete college experience keeping in mind that their health is not affectedWe are suggesting that the college have open ground as the transmission is less when they are in the open We are ensuring they go outside and in classroom when are asking them open doors and windows We are seeing to it that they are wearing masks she said The principal also informed that the college is starting a new welfare scheme for this year to provide monetary support to students facing financial hardshipsWe are also working on providing student support to students like providing them living expenses By next week we are creating a list of students who required welfare support and will be providing it to them as living expense in the city may have gone up she saidApart from the scholarship this is the new thing we are starting which will be available only for this year Under this the monetary support will be given to students in need Depending on the need some amount will be provided to the students during this period as welfare support she added PTI VA GJS GJS TDS TDS

New Delhi Nov 18 PTI With the classes for first-year undergraduate courses beginning on November 22 the Delhi University on Thursday issued guidelines against ragging directing the placing of sealed complaint boxes in front of principals office and constitution of vigilance squads in colleges Colleges will hold orientation days for the new students to acquaint them with their respective colleges and departments Miranda House will be holding its orientation through online mode on November 20 and students will also be given a virtual tour of the college The Shri Ram College of Commerce Indraprastha College For Women Gargi College and Ramanujan College will be holding their orientation days on November 22 Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences will hold its convocation on November 20 Departments will also be holding their separate orientation programmes for the freshers The orientation programmes will be held in online mode and the classes will also be held in virtual mode The anti-ragging guidelines stated that the heads of institutions may identify a Disciplinary Resource Person DRP in each college hostel hall department and their contact details must be shared with the proctors office The institutions may erect suitable hoardingsbill boardsbanners in prominent places within the respective campus to exhort the students to prevent or not to indulge in ragging Along with the DRP senior teachers NCCNSS officers if any and senior students may be involved to form a Disciplinary Resource Committee DRCDisciplinary Committee at the collegefacultydepartment level they said They also suggested the constitution of vigilance squads in addition to DRCDC taking help of NCCNSS student volunteers to keep constant vigil to avoid cases of indiscipline among students and to prevent untoward incidents Sealed complaint boxes be placed in front of the Principals Office especially in those undergraduate colleges which have hostels for the benefit of the potential victims of ragging to enable them to put their complaintssuggestions to College authorities Officials in each college on whom the responsibility has been entrusted will look into those complaints and take prompt necessary action as per University norms the guidelines said The vigilance squads and the DRCDC must act in complete coordination because ultimately action with regard to any incident of indiscipline involving any student or group of students will be recommended by the DRCDC and thereupon respective the head of Institution will initiate the disciplinary action it said Each student is expected to carry hisher own identity card Entry to the institution should be strictly governed on the verification of the identity cards carried by students To enforce such regulated entry Security Guards and other associated staff may be engaged Such security staff along with the vigilance squads may organise from time to time some surprise raids on the premises of cafeteriacanteenhostelsstudent union roomsgeneral common roomsparking lots etc the guidelines said They also suggested introduction of personal consultantmentor in colleges and departments and attaching of all new entrants either individually and collectively in a group to a specific faculty member who should devote a little time to overcome any emotional problems resulting from adjustment to a new environment Ideally speaking a student of science discipline should be such as humanities or commerce and vice-versa they said They also said that specific care should be taken to avoid harassment of any student on the basis of caste sex religion and said that in this case preventive actions are more important than punitive actionsPTI SLB AQS AQS
