Nagpur Apr 23 PTI The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company MSEDCL has directed suppliers to provide a whopping 15 lakh power meters by September this year to overcome the shortage an official release has said One lakh new power meters will be available by April 30 and two lakh in May Thereafter 327 lakh meters will be available every month from June to September it said About 8-9 lakh new connections are commissioned by the MSEDCL every year At the same time the MSEDCL also needs two lakh meters per month for replacing faulty meters and other reasons At present 131 lakh meters are available in the field offices of MSEDCL till April 22 the release stated Besides the tender process to purchase 10 lakh smart metres is under consideration while the process of procuring 150 lakh three-phase meters is in the final stage The supply of these three-phase meters will be available by the end of May In view of increasing the consumer demand the process of procuring another 20 lakh single-phase meters has also been started the release stated As per the directions of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission MERC work orders have been issued for the installation of prepaid meters for agricultural pumps which are connected under the high-pressure power distribution system to audit the energy of agricultural lines The process of installing 15 lakh prepaid meters for these farmers will be completed by December the release said PTI COR NSK NSK

Thane Mar 31 PTI The Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB has arrested a senior woman official of the MSEDCL in Navi Mumbai for allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 50000 bribe an official said on Thursday The accused Varsha Prabhakar Deshmukh was posted as the additional executive engineer in the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltds MSEDCL Airoli subdivision office in Navi Mumbai She was arrested by the Thane unit of the ACB on Wednesday The complainant in the case worked with an electrical company which had filed an application with the MSEDCL But the official demanded Rs 50000 for processing the application and allowing an increase in the power load ACBs deputy superintendent of police Maya More said The complainant approached the anti-graft agency whose officials laid a trap and nabbed Deshmukh while accepting the bribe amount she said An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against her at Rabale police station PTI COR NP NP

Mumbai Mar 24 PTI Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut on Thursday announced immediate suspension of a senior MSEDCL official and a high-level probe against him over corruption and other allegations levelled against the latter Raut made the announcement in the state Assembly after Shiv Sena MLA Dnyanraj Chaugule and others charged Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limiteds MSEDCL deputy director security and enforcement Sumit Kumar with corruption and moral degradation The MLAs accused Kumar of demanding money illegally from a meter reading agency in the MSEDCL taking advantage of his post and threatening other officials In his replying Raut said Kumar is at present posted as deputy director security and enforcement at the Konkan regional office of the MSEDCL The officer has been given additional charge of chief investigation officer the minister added There was also a complaint of moral degradation against him That is the main concern Of the complaints received against him it seems many were made by women employees Hence an order is being issued to immediately suspend Sumit Kumar and for a high-level probe against him he said PTI ENM GK GK

Pune Mar 23 PTI Some areas in Pimpri Chinchwad city near Pune in Maharashtra experienced a power outage for hours on Wednesday after a cat climbed on transmission equipment causing a technical fault officials from the state power utility said adding that 60000 consumers were inconvenienced The power outage occurred in Bhosari Akurdi and surrounding areas in Pimpri Chinchwad at 6 AM The power supply resumed at around 2 PM A cat entered into a 22 KV yard of a transformer in Bhosari on Wednesday morning following which areas like Bhosari Akurdi and surrounding localities experienced the power outage an MSEDCL official said An MSEDCL release said that the cat climbed on power equipment which caused a technical fault The cat however died The power outage affected at least 60000 consumers The official said that the power supply was restored due to the efforts of officials using alternative power sub-stationsPTI SPK NSK NSK

Aurangabad Mar 21 PTI Farmers in Beed in Maharashtra have said sparking in electricity lines passing above their fields was burning down standing sugarcane crop They claimed sugarcane cultivated on an area exceeding 120 acres in different villages had got burnt down in this manner recently Ganesh Thapde a farmer from Dhekanmoh in Beed said he had lost nearly 400 tonnes of sugarcane over an area of 75 acres due to power supply fluctuation with the latest fire taking place on Sunday at around 4pm I has spent Rs 15 lakh as cost of cultivation in the last 14 months and the produce could have netted me Rs 8 lakh he said ruing his loss Farmer Govind Shingare of Awasgao said Sundays fire affected five sugarcane growers while Vijay Nandure said he lost his crop over an area of 18 acres in a similar incident in Saundana village in Beeds Kej tehsil The produce was good this year due to long span of cultivation and abundance of water The power lines pass just two to three feet above the cane If these wires touch sparks are emitted which sometimes burns down the crops Nandure told PTI Speaking on the issue MSEDCL Marathwada joint director Mangesh Gondavale said Due to lack of firm soil electricity poles sometimes start tilting which causes lines to touch In such a case there are chances of sparking We work on this problem during our maintenance rounds However farmers can contact us if they come across such a situation We will try to solve it on priority he added Another official from the MSEDCL said 13 incidents of crops catching fire were reported in 2020-21 with five people getting compensation of Rs 999 lakh In 2021-22 between April and February nine such incidents took place with compensation of Rs 60000 being given to two persons while five cases have been returned with queries and two are yet to be decided he added PTI AW BNM BNM BNM
