Soundararajan to unfurl tricolour in Telangana Puducherry raises hackles of Narayanasamy

24-Jan-2022
Puducherry Jan 24 PTI Governor of Telangana Tamilisai Soundararajan who is also holding additional charge as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry would unfurl the national flag on Republic Day in both the places An official source told PTI on Monday that Soundararajan would first unfurl the flag at Telangana and fly to Puducherry to unfurl the flag here When Lt General retd A K Singh was Administrator of Andaman and Nicobar Islands he was entrusted with the additional responsibility of being Lt Governor in 2014 with Puducherry not having a regular incumbent in the post of Lt Governor after Virendra Kataria was replaced by Singh in 2014 However Singh unfurled the flag at Andaman and let the then Chief Minister N Rangasamy to hoist the flag in Puducherry in 2015 The decision on flag-hoisting by Soundararajan drew flak from former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy He told a virtual press conference that Soundararajan is a full-fledged Governor of Telangana and is only holding the post of Lieutenant Governor under additional charge Narayanasamy said the Centre should have appointed a Lieutenant Governor instead of letting a Governor of another State hold additional post The former Chief Minister said she rarely visits Telangana and is in Puducherry most of the time The stand of Soundararajan that she would unfurl the flag here on January 26 is amusing and unacceptable She should have let the Chief Minister N Rangasamy hoist the flag and participate in the ceremonial function in Telangana But she has preferred to kickstart the ceremonial celebrations in both the places This is a clear case of throwing to the winds the democratic features of an elected government he said Narayanasamy said there is already a precedent of a Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands holding additional charge the post of Lt Governor and letting the Chief Minister N Rangasamy unfurl the flag in 2015 Why should there be failure to follow this precedent he asked and also held the Centre responsible for the Lt Governor going ahead with her plan to hoist the flag in two places He said that there was still time for the Centre to make proper arrangements and post a full-fledged Lt Governor for Puducherry Narayanasamy said denying the opportunity to Chief Minister to unfurl the flag by the Lt Governor only shows that she wants to virtually and totally take under her control all the functions of a government Rangasamy is in deep slumber and he should wake up Narayanasamy said Now Soundararajan is perhaps the only incumbent in the gubernatorial post in the country to have the uncommon opportunity of hoisting the national flag in two places Soundararajan succeeded Kiran Bedi who was shunted out of Puducherry where she was Lieutenant Governor from 2016 to 2021 PTI COR NVG NVG

Puducherry government failed to implement COVID curbs on New Years eve former CM Narayanasamy

22-Jan-2022
Puducherry Jan 22 PTI Former Puducherry chief minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy on Saturday charged the Union territory government with being responsible for the current unabated rise in daily cases of COVID-19 Addressing presspersons through virtual mode Narayanasamy said Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister N Rangasamy had let celebrations take place on New Years eve in Puducherry despite being advised by political leaders including himself against allowing such gatherings to go ahead He said thousands of people from other states had thronged Puducherry on New Years eve and consequently the virus has now been spreading fast in the UT The L-G and Chief Minister should come out with reasons for their faux pas They have not opened their mouth although I had sounded a warning against letting the celebrations from going ahead he said Narayanasamy said the government was taking only a small number of samples for testing every day If there are higher number of tests the actual number of cases would become known he said The former chief minister also wanted the Health department to reach out to the villagers in the UT where people unaware of the symptoms of the scourge were keeping indoors He said there was no strict enforcement of curbs to keep a tab on the spread of the infection The departments concerned are also very lax and letting people skip COVID norms he claimed Instead of being a protector of the health and lives of the people the government is virtually encouraging the spread of the virus the former chief minister said He also pointed out that the test positivity rate in Puducherry was more than 45 per cent now and the number of active cases was also rising exposing the frailty in testing of the samples Narayanasamy also took strong exception to the stand of the centrally-administered JIPMER that those seeking health care services in the hospital should first register themselves online This is a blow on the purpose of having a medical college here Online pre-registration is unpractical and unwholesome The JIPMER hospital should scrap the system and render health care services to people approaching it for treatment he said Puducherry recorded 2446 fresh coronavirus cases on Saturday taking the overall tally to 150316 while three fatalities raised the death toll to 1901 according to a health department release PTI COR HDA HDA

26-Dec-2021
Puducherry Dec 26 PTI Former Chief Minister of Puducherry and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy on Sunday called upon Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister NRangasamy to ban New year eve celebration in the Union Territory as the current unabated pandemic situation and the apprehended outbreak of Omicron do not warrant such a celebration In his virtual press conference here the former Chief Minister said every New Year eve n witnesses not than 10000 people from within Puducherry and also from other States thronging the seashore here Coronavirus and also its new variant Omicron have been holding the people to ransom in several States Bigger States like Karnataka have banned the celebration of New Year Consequently people will make a beeline to Puducherry and be a super-spreader of the virus he said and wanted the ban on celebration Narayanasamy wanted the government of Puducherry to reconsider the plan to hold the National Youth Festival here for five days from January 12 I am not able to understand why the Centre and Puducherry government have selected the relatively small Puducherry to hold the festival Not less than 8000 people are expected to visit Puducherry from different States for the festival he said Narayanasamy feared that the festival would lead to the spread of coronavirus fast and open the gates for the outbreak of Omicron although so far Omicron has not hit Puducherry The former Chief Minister said the government should take into consideration the health and safety of the people when decisions to hold festivals are taken He said the move to use the now-closed AFT Mill as a Covid Care Centre is a wrong decision The Indira Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital which has served as a Covid hospital has three additional blocks where the patients can be accommodated he said He said the alleged replacement of gold ornaments pledged by customers with the Puducherry Cooperative Urban Bank with fakes has struck at the root of the faith of the people in the bank Two officials of the bank have been arrested in the wake of unearthing of the scam The police should crack down on the accused without bowing to any pressure to hush up the case he said He alleged that the Rangasamy-headed NDA government was siphoning off funds from several departments and schemes to distribute flood relief to families holding ration cards PTI COR NVG NVG

2021 Puducherrys political churnings saw fall of elected government

26-Dec-2021
Puducherry Dec 26 PTI Fall of the elected Congress-led coalition government a short period of Presidents rule BJPs significant electoral gains in the Assembly polls the return of N Rangasamy as Chief Minister and torrential rains---2021 had enough in store for this small union territory A spate of defections in the then Chief Minister V Narayanasamy-led cabinet triggered by senior party leader and PWD Minister A Namassivayam culminated in the fall of the Congress-DMK coalition government on February 22 this year with the AINRC-led NDA storming to power three months later where the BJP scored its first electoral wins in the UT resulting in the saffron partys expanding its southern foot print The political crisis started on January 25 with a virtually sudden resignation by Namassivayam as a minister as well as a legislator with three more including then Speaker K Lakshminarayanan who later joined the AINRC subsequently parting ways with the grand old party DMK MLA K Venkatesan also resigned With the crisis deepening Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararjan who succeeded Kiran Bedi after she was removed from office directed Narayanasamy to seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the House on February 22 However Narayanasamy who tabled the motion of confidence did not face the confidence vote but tendered his ministrys resignation to the LG in the backdrop of lack of majority Presidents rule was subsequently imposed for a short period The Assembly poll held on April 6 witnessed the AINRC and BJP emerging victorious in 16 of the total 30 constituencies to form the ministry the BJP in particular having more reasons to smile as it netted six seats in its first electoral success in the UT AIADMK which was also part of the NDA drew a blank in the polls There are three nominated members belonging to BJP The Congress could return just two seats while the DMK and independents won six each The cabinet formation of the NDA was no smooth affair as Chief Minister Rangasamy who alone took the oath initially in early May after returning power after five years was hospitalised with COVID-19 Later a tug of war ensued between him and the BJP as it wanted Namassivayam to be made the CMs deputy However Rangasamy a veteran did not relent from his stand not to have a deputy CM Later the BJP was given the post of Speaker and two cabinet berths and the ministry formation took place at the fag end of June this year The saffron party was also allotted the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the UT Incidentally the cabinet has a woman member after a gap of 38 years Ahead of the polls then chief minister Narayanasamy made a faux pas when he translated complaints into compliments to his party leader Rahul Gandhi during his visit here after a fisherwoman aired her grievances at a meeting attended by the Wayanad MP drawing criticism from various quarters Heavy rains hit Puducherry and Karaikal regions during the last quarter of the year leading to inundation in many parts A Central team visited the affected areas to assess the damage and the territorial government has sought interim relief of Rs 300 crore to tackle the situation arising out of the natural fury The State Election Commission made an unsuccessful bid to hold civic polls as petitions were filed against its move to conduct the elections without making reservation of wards for the BCs and STs As the COVID-19 wave continued through 2020 Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan personally took up the awareness on vaccination and went door to door to meet citizens and persuade them to take the jabs PTI COR SA APR APR
