Sensex tanks 870 pts as Ukraine crisis continues to roil global mkts

Mumbai Feb 28 PTI Equity benchmark Sensex crashed about 870 points to slip below the 55000-level in opening deals on Monday in line with weakening global sentiments amid the worsening Russia-Ukraine crisisThe 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 86933 points or 156 per cent lower at 5498919 in early trade and the NSE Nifty plunged 23380 points or 140 per cent to 1642460Barring PowerGrid Tata Steel and Sun Pharma all Sensex shares were trading in the redSnapping its seven-day losing streak on Friday the 30-share BSE Sensex had climbed 132861 points or 244 per cent to settle at 5585852 Similarly the broader NSE Nifty had soared 41045 points or 253 per cent to 1665840On a weekly basis the Sensex had lost 1974 points or 341 per cent and the Nifty gave up 618 points or 357 per centMeanwhile in a dramatic escalation of tensions in eastern Europe Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his nuclear forces to be on high alert in response to what he called aggressive statements by leading NATO powers over the Ukraine conflictSpooked by the Ukraine crisis foreign institutional investors further offloaded shares worth Rs 447070 crore in the Indian capital markets on Friday exchange data showedAsian shares were trading mostly lower in afternoon trade on Monday tracking the worsening geopolitical crisis in eastern EuropeOil prices which have been rising since the Russian invasion on Ukraine shot up again on Monday on worries about supply disruptions Brent crude futures were up over 5 per cent at USD 9961 a barrel PTI BAL BAL

Rupee spurts by 22 paise to 7444 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai Feb 21 PTI The rupee spurted by 22 paise to 7444 in early trade on Monday on softer crude oil prices and revived hopes of a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine crisis The local currency opened on a strong note at 7451 to a dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market against the previous close of 7466 on Friday The rupee gained further ground to trade at 7444 at 1030 hours supported by benign crude oil prices Reports suggested that the US and Russia have agreed to hold a summit on the Ukraine standoff calming jittery investors The reports also suggested that one of the preconditions for the summit is that Russia would not invade Ukraine raising hopes of a diplomatic solution to the crisis Of late crude oil prices have spurted on fears of supply disruption due to a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia The Brent Crude on Monday dropped by 034 per cent to USD 9322 per barrel The US dollar index also edged lower by 021 per cent to 9584 Foreign investors remained net sellers in Indian capital markets as they sold equities worth Rs 252996 crore on a net basis on Friday Meanwhile on the domestic equity front the BSE Sensex was trading lower by 39817 points at 5743480 and the NSE Nifty dropped 9320 points to 1718310 in late morning deals PTI MR MKJ

Mumbai Oct 25 PTI The Indian rupee depreciated 14 paise to 7504 against the US dollar in opening trade on Monday weighed down firm crude oil prices and a muted trend in domestic equities At the interbank foreign exchange the rupee opened on a weak note at 7498 then fell further to 7504 registering a decline of 14 paise from the last close On Friday the rupee had closed at 7490 against the US dollar Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies fell 012 per cent to 9353 Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures advanced 080 per cent to USD 8621 per barrel Moreover foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 269770 crore as per exchange data On the domestic equity market front the 30-share Sensex was trading 22908 points or 038 per cent lower at 6059254 while the broader NSE Nifty was trading 9855 points or 054 per cent lower at 1801635 PTI DRR ANS ANS

Mumbai Oct 18 PTI The Indian rupee was trading marginally lower by 2 paise at 7528 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday tracking stronger greenback against key rivals overseas At the interbank forex market the local unit opened on a steady note and traded cautiously between a high of 7526 and a low of 7529 against the American currency On Thursday the rupee had settled at 7526 against the US dollar Forex market was closed on Friday for Dussehra holiday Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies was up 017 per cent at 9409 Brent crude futures the global oil benchmark rose 107 per cent to USD 8576 per barrel On the domestic equity market front the BSE Sensex was trading higher by 52554 points or 086 per cent at 6183149 while the broader NSE Nifty was up 16655 points or 091 per cent at 1850510 Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers in the capital market on Thursday as they purchased shares worth Rs 168160 crore as per exchange data PTI MKJ ANS ANS

Mumbai Sep 24 PTI The Indian rupee depreciated 13 paise to 7377 against the US dollar in opening trade on Friday in line with other Asian currencies amid a strong greenback in the overseas market At the interbank foreign exchange the rupee opened on a weak note and fell to 7377 against the dollar registering a decline of 13 paise from the last close even as the domestic equity market was trading with handsome gains In the previous session on Thursday the rupee had settled at 7364 against the US dollar Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies rose 004 per cent to 9312 The Indian rupee opened weaker this Friday against the dollar after benchmark US yields reached their highest level in more than two months on anticipated withdrawal of policy support said Sriram Iyer Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities Most of the emerging market and Asian currencies have started weaker against the dollar this Friday morning and could weigh on sentiments Iyer added Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market on Thursday as they purchased shares worth Rs 35793 crore as per exchange data On the domestic equity market front the 30-share Sensex was trading 33243 points or 056 per cent higher at 6021779 In initial deals the benchmark index had touched a lifetime high of 60333 Similarly the broader NSE Nifty was trading 8620 points or 048 per cent up at 1790915 In early deals the wide-based index had touched a record 1794765 Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures advanced 013 per cent to USD 7735 per barrel PTI DRR ANS ANS
