New Delhi Feb 27 PTI A 55-year-old woman died after the two-wheeler she was riding was allegedly hit by a truck in the Lajpat Nagar area of Southeast Delhi on Sunday police said The deceased identified as Santosh Arora was a housemaker they said The accident took place around 330 pm at Lal Sai Chowk in Lajpat Nagar when Arora was riding a pillion on an Activa scooter with her cousin Ashish Deputy Commissioner of Police Southeast Esha Pandey said The two were going from Moolchand underpass side to Ashram Chowk she said adding their scooter was hit when they reached Lal Sai chowk crossing below Nehru Nagar flyover The two-wheeler was hit by a Bharat Gas supply truck which was also plying on the same carriageway The injured woman died on the spot and her body was shifted to AIIMS trauma centre the DCP said She said truck driver Baijnath 32 has been arrested and both the vehicles were taken into possession PTI AMP RAX RAX

New Delhi Jan 30 PTI Days after a 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted gang-raped and paraded naked on streets in an east Delhi colony by her neighbours it transpired on Sunday that her younger sister too had been assaulted by her assailants Acting on the complaint of the 18-year-old younger sister of the victim of the shocking incident at Kasturba Nagar police have lodged another case against her assailants including eight women one man and three juveniles who have already been apprehended police said on Sunday Shahdara Deputy Commissioner of Police R Sathiyasundaram said the police have already arrested nine people eight women and one man and detained three minor boys for their alleged roles in the crime against the elder sister The victims younger sister came forward with her complaint after the police arrested them he said adding she alleged that she too was harassed molested and thrashed by the assailants of her sister days before the incident involving her elder sister In the complaint the younger sister has alleged that she was attacked and beaten up on January 19 and her auto was also set on fire They had also created a ruckus at her workplace because of which she had to leave her job the DCP said quoting from her complaint When I stay at home their accused women come and thrash me When I step out they men harass me These people say that they arent scared of the police They dont let me work or earn any money How am I supposed to run my house I am in danger They threaten me she alleged in her complaint The DCP said on her complaint a separate case was registered on Saturday against all the people apprehended for assaulting the elder sister The second case was registered under various IPC sections on molestation physical assault criminal intimidation and mischief by fire among others he said The 20-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and paraded naked by her neighbours after a teenage boy belonging to their family had committed suicide after being spurned by her PTI AMP RAX RAX

New Delhi Nov 25 PTI Despite a dip in crimes against children the trial of 99 per cent of cases under the POCSO Act were still pending by December 2020 a Praja Foundation report said on Thursday According to the foundation data in 94 per cent of the total 1197 cases under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences lodged in 2020 the victims were girls with the highest number of 721 rape cases and 376 sexual assault cases The report pointed out that while POCSO Act was enacted with the sole purpose of providing speedy justice to minors the trial of 99 per cent of cases of crimes against children was pending as of December 2020 According to the data 42 per cent of the total rape cases were committed against children below 18 years in 2020 compared to 47 per cent in 2018 and 45 per cent in 2019 The data showed the highest number of rape victims were in the age group of 12 to 18 years 620 out of 721 in 2020 and that in 95 per cent of these rape cases under the POCSO Act offenders were known to victims The data highlighted that out of the 67 cases under the POCSO Act against boys 93 per cent were unnatural offences The low proportion of reported male cases to the total cases also reflects the stigma attached to the reporting of sexual crime against males In its report the Praja foundation claimed in 2020 of the total IPC cases investigated the charge sheet was filed only in 28 per cent cases while the investigation in 58 per cent cases of crime against women and 56 per cent of crimes against children were incomplete The report pointed out a 20 per cent shortage of police sub-inspectors responsible for investigating cases as of March 2021 Out of 332274 IPC cases to be tried in Delhi courts the trial of 92 per cent of cases was pending as of December 2020 reflecting an overburdened judiciary leading to the delayed justice for victims The trial of 99 per cent of cases of crime against children was pending as of December 2020 it stated When contacted Delhi Police Spokesperson Chinmoy Biswal said In Delhi we register crime against children and POCSO cases promptly and take a deadline of 60 days under POCSO Act for investigation very seriously A majority of the 56 per cent pending cases last year has been charge-sheeted and moved to court Understandably there will always be cases under investigation upon completion of which these are sent to courts Pending investigation means cases are in the process of investigation and charge sheeting he added POCSO cases and crime against children remain are our top priority he asserted We have a higher charge-sheeting rate of 9906 per cent than the all India rate of 947 per cent or metro cities rate of 968 per cent in POCSO cases Biswal said We also have a much higher conviction rate of 80 per cent than that of metro cities -- 424 per cent -- and an all-India rate of 396 per cent he added PTI AMP RAX RAX
