Rupee skids 21 paise to 7594 against USD as crude oil spikes

Mumbai Mar 30 PTI The rupee declined by 21 paise to 7594 against the US dollar on Wednesday as surging crude oil prices and fuel rate hikes by the oil marketing companies fanned fears of inflation and interest rate hikes However a strong rally in the domestic equities capped the rupees loss forex traders said Development in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the movement of crude oil prices remain the main focus for forex markets they added At the interbank foreign exchange market the rupee opened strong at 7565 against the American dollar but soon entered the negative territory as investors dumped riskier assets During the session it swung between a high of 7562 and a low of 7597 The local unit finally settled at 7594 against the dollar down 21 paise from the previous close Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies slipped 042 per cent to 9802 Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures surged 188 per cent to USD 11230 per barrel At home oil marketing companies raised prices of petrol and diesel by 80 paise a litre each on Wednesday taking the total increase in rates in the last nine days to Rs 560 per litre This is the ninth increase in prices since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22 Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market on Tuesday as they bought shares worth Rs 3547 crore according to stock exchange data PTI BAL MR MR

Mumbai Mar 28 PTI The rupee on Monday appreciated 8 paise to close at 7616 against the US dollar following a fall in crude oil prices and gains in the domestic equities A strengthening American currency overseas and concerns over renewed foreign capital outflows capped the gains in the domestic unit forex traders said At the interbank forex market the local unit opened weak at 7636 but entered positive territory later in the session It witnessed an intra-day high of 7615 and a low of 7638 The rupee closed at 7616 registering a rise of 8 paise over its previous close In the previous session the rupee had settled at 7624 against the US dollar Rupee has been oscillating between 76 and 7650 for the last six trading sessions Even after a stronger dollar index the rupee manages to add gains amid lower crude oil prices higher equities and corporates dollar selling The fate of the rupee will be decided by the price action of crude oil and risk sentiments Spot USDINR is expected to trade in the range of 76 to 7650 this month Dilip Parmar Research Analyst HDFC Securities said Meanwhile the dollar index which measures the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies rose 032 per cent to 9913 Brent crude futures the global oil benchmark fell sharply by 356 per cent to USD 11635 per barrel On the domestic equity market front the BSE Sensex ended 23129 points or 040 per cent higher at 5759349 while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 69 points or 040 per cent to 17222 Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in the capital market on Monday as they sold shares worth Rs 801 crore according to stock exchange data Overseas investors have pulled out a net Rs 11485597 crore from the Indian markets in the current year so far amid heightened geopolitical tensions and inflation concerns Foreign portfolio investors have sold domestic equities worth Rs 4826165 crore so far this month taking the year-to-date tally this year to a massive Rs 11485597 crore according to depositories data PTI BAL MR

Mumbai Dec 22 PTI In a range-bound session the rupee appreciated by 5 paise to close at 7554 provisional against the US dollar on Wednesday as a firm trend in domestic equities boosted investor sentiments Besides lower crude prices in the international market and a subdued dollar overseas also supported the local unit forex dealers said The rupee resumed higher at 7556 per dollar against the previous close of 7559 at the interbank foreign exchange market and hovered in a range of 7548 to 7565 before settling at 7554 registering a rise of 5 paise On the domestic equity market front the BSE Sensex ended 61155 points or 109 per cent higher at 5693056 while the broader NSE Nifty surged 18460 points or 11 per cent to 1695545 Brent crude futures the global oil benchmark fell 026 per cent to USD 7379 per barrel Meanwhile the dollar index which gauges the greenbacks strength against a basket of six currencies was trading lower by 004 per cent at 9645 Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Tuesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 120982 crore exchange data showed PTI BAL MR MR
