We have done half the job at IPL auction over to players to get us that elusive trophy Ness Wadia

25-Feb-2022
New Delhi Feb 25 PTI Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia feels they have done half the job by picking a well-rounded squad at the recent IPL auction and hopes the chosen players will do the rest to help the franchise bag the elusive trophyPunjab Kings have under-performed since IPLs inception reaching the final only once in 14 attempts They blew hot and cold in the last three seasons to end up sixth out of eight teamsThey went into the mega auction with the maximum purse of Rs 72 crore out of the 10 teams which doesnt provide any guarantee for a successful buying spree due in a highly dynamic environment but their decisions were largely lauded by the pundits 50 of the battle is getting the right team which is what weve done Now its up to the players coaches Anil Kumble Jonty Rhodes and Damien Wright to really take us to that elusive title we have been waiting for so long Or at least a place in the top four play-offs because we have had a bad run the last four-five years Wadia told PTI Having retained only two players in Mayank Agarwal and young pacer Arshdeep Singh Punjab managed to get the likes of Jonny Bairstow Shikhar Dhawan Rahul Chahar Kagiso Rabada Odean Smith and Liam LivingstoneTo maintain some continuity they also bought back the big-hitting Shah Rukh Khan and left-arm spinner Harpeet Brar besides getting Rishi Dhawan and Sandeep Sharma who both played for Punjab in the pastIn recent seasons Punjab struggled with power hitting in the middle-order and death bowling We have well balanced squad now We bat all the way down to eight or nine and have the bowlers who can do the job both upfront and at the death I would say this was the toughest and most successful auction for us since the first edition in 2008 said Wadia comparing the current squad to the 2008 batch which had the likes of Yuvraj Singh Mahela Jayawardene Kumar Sangakkara Brett Lee and Irfan PathanThe co-owner said their preparation for the mega auction began in October last year and that included intense mock auctions We had a very good idea of who we would be going for and we were pretty accurate when it came to that And also our objective was not to really focus on what others are doing Each team has its own way of playing style number one and number two how to get the right players to meet that style so we were very happy with the players we got Yes we would have liked to have kept some of the players which we didnt retain he said referring to Aiden Markram Talking more about the preparations for the auction he said There were several mock auctions It was very very intense If you dont plan and youre not prepared then you wont be able to deal with the dynamics of a battle Im very proud to say that all the planning and effort by everyone including the board has helped us to achieve what we wanted to achieve Punjab were also committed to get India U-19 star Raj Bawa on board and paid Rs 2 crore for his services One player they badly wanted was India all-rounder Shardul Thakur We wanted to get more Indian bowlers the likes of Thakur Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar but I am happy they went for big money It was high time our Indian bowlers got their due said WadiaHe is also happy that IPL is back in India and hopes it can be taken to other cities outside of Maharashtra if it is safe enough to do it I feel we have seen the worst of the pandemic It is fantastic that IPL is back in India where it belongs If it is held in various parts of India it is even better I think for this year it is best if it is in one state and going forward we can have it all around the country he added PTI BS ATK ATK

Lack of red-ball cricket hampering players skills already Jaydev Unadkat

25-Jan-2022
New Delhi Jan 25 PTI Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Unadkat feels the players skills against the red ball have started diminishing and potential cancellation of a second consecutive Ranji Trophy season will be a great loss for domestic cricket in India After the COVID-19-forced cancellation of Ranji Trophy last year a first in the tournaments rich history the postponement of the current season due to the third wave of the pandemic has left many players worried The premier tournament was supposed to begin on January 13 and lead pacer Unadkat and the rest of the Saurashtra players had started their preparations to defend the maiden title they won back in March 2020 Players skills are being hampered It felt like a different ball game altogether at the camp with players only used to white ball cricket for the last two seasons Two years in a row would be a great loss One year itself was a great loss When we started our pre-season camp before the eventual postponement it felt like a whole new game Unadkat told PTI Leaving the ball bowling with pace and bowling long spells All that had gone out of the picture It is going to be difficult for sure if it doesnt happen this year too I hear that BCCI is keen on staging it If the virus situation doesnt become threatening we can have it in February with a stricter bubble and more vigilance said the left-arm pacer who picked a record 67 wickets in a memorable 2020 season If February is not possible then the BCCI must start the next season with Ranji Trophy feels the pacer who has played one Test 7 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India For batters even when I was batting I left the first ball alone it felt very different to be honest I had not left a ball in two years of my batting practice Probably the same for all batters barring the openers who were doing it even in one-dayers For the bowlers bowling that full length and trying to swing the ball but people were trying different things and were bowling a few balls It was bound to happen with such a long gap It will hamper the skills of cricketers for sure if there is a two-year gap said Unadkat recalling the experience at the training camp The seasoned cricketer also understands that the BCCI has an enormous task at hand in staging a 38-team event amid the challenges posed by the pandemic It is disappointing but I feel this was bound to happen considering the COVID situation and the right decision taken was taken Hopefully things get better and we can play at least half of it or the league stage before the IPL he said Central contracts will ensure financial security in these uncertain times The BCCI compensated all the players who were part of the 2019-2020 season but that did not include many players on the fringes of state teams Unadkat offered a solution See the maximum that BCCI can do is compensate players like last year but that is only for the guys who played the year before The guys who were not part of that squad and are on the fringes it is more difficult for them May be the state associations can take the initiative Whosoever was on the brink of selection for example if top 20 are being compensated by the BCCI the next 20 too have to be taken care of On his stance on central contracts he added The board was keen on it coupe of years ago when things were normal but post COVID no one really has put their hands on it I dont know why That can obviously help a lot of cricketers especially in this situation With red-ball cricket not played in the country in the last 24 months the India selectors can only factor in the performance of the 2020 season while giving an opportunity in the Test team Despite a stellar season Unadkat has been ignored repeatedly But that doesnt impact his motivation level Obviously losing out a year after having the best phase of my career in red-ball cricket was unfortunate I would still be at the same level of motivation when the season starts White ball cricket has been happening and I am improving on that front I just hope I get a team where I can actually get to show my skills in a versatile role he added referring to the upcoming IPL mega auction PTI BS AH AH
