Court convicts police officer for raping two minor sisters at police station

Shillong Mar 25 PTI A POCSO court here has convicted a police officer for raping two minor sisters at a police station in Meghalayas South West Garo Hills district in 2013 The accused Nurul Islam was then the officer in-charge of Ampati police station when he committed the crime against the two sisters at the police station Nurul Islam is found guilty and convicted for committing offences defined and punishable under POCSO Act 2012 and also IPC act the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences POCSO court said on Thursday The quantum of sentence will be announced later the court said Islam raped the two sisters a 14-year-old- girl at the Ampati police station on March 13 and also on March 14 2013 On March 31 the same year he raped her 17-year-old elder sister too at gunpoint following which the father of the victims filed an FIR against the officer in charge The father in his FIR alleged Islam threatened to kill both the victims and also to implicate them in criminal cases if they dared to inform anyone about the crime The investigation of the case was later shifted to East Khasi Hills district considering the sensitivity of the case PTI JOP RG RG

Shillong Mar 22 PTI The Meghalaya Prison department and Indian Oil Corporation have launched a new initiative to train jail inmates in various sports events for improving their physical and mental well-being Inspector General of Police in charge of Prisons M Kharkrang launched the month-long training programme for jail inmates together with IOC executive director G Ramesh at the district jail here on Monday Today marks an important day for prison and correctional services as inmates will be trained in carrom board and volleyball as part of the parivartan prison to pride initiative in collaboration with IOC Kharkrang told PTI He said the sports training programme for jail inmates is aimed at improving the physical and mental well-being of prison inmates especially during the pandemic period The IGP Prisons said the programme will also be rolled out in other district jails across the state At present 75 inmates will receive sports training during the one month period he said IOC chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya who launched the programme via online mode said the total number of prisons covered under the programme has gone up to 37 and the IOC aims to coach over 550 inmates during the third phase of the programme He said the first two phases of the programme has already heralded a remarkable social movement by transforming the lives of the inmates and facilitating their integration with society PTI JOP RG RG

Shillong Sep 26 PTI The Border Security Force BSF handed over a 13-year-old Bangladeshi boy who was apprehended while illegally crossing the international border in Meghalaya to the BGB in a goodwill gesture officials said on Sunday A woman smuggler and the boy were apprehended on September 24 while illegally crossing the India-Bangladesh border through the unfenced area at Nongkhen in Meghalaya for petty smuggling a BSF statement said Both the woman and the boy hail from Sylhet district of Bangladesh The woman revealed that she brought the minor boy with her as labour for carrying items meant for smuggling into India the BSF said The boy was handed over to Border Guard Bangladesh BGB during a flag meeting on Saturday in presence of police representatives as a goodwill gesture and the apprehended Bangladeshi woman was handed over to police station Baghmara for further legal action the statement said BSF Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General Inderjit Singh Rana said the goodwill gesture was adopted by the BSF as a humanitarian approach in such cases where the victims are minors Both the border guarding forces have developed an understanding on such subjects and these issues are amicably resolved to strengthen the existing relationship and to enhance mutual trust between both the neighbouring countries he said PTI JOP RG RG
