New Delhi Apr 22 PTI The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant bail to Maharashtra cabinet minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik in a case of money laundering saying the probe is at a nascent stage A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant said that it will not interfere with the Bombay High Court order of March 15 but Malik can avail the remedy available under the law before the trial court Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Malik said they have arrested me in 2022 for something that happened in 1999 He said there is no case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act PMLA as there is no predicate offence The bench said the investigation is at a very nascent stage and it will not interfere with the high court order PTI MNL MNL DV DV

New Delhi Mar 31 PTI The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the All India Quota mop-up round counselling for NEET-PG 2021-22 admissions to resolve the anomalies over 146 fresh seats which were not available for candidates who participated in round one and two of the processA bench of Justices DY Chandrachud Surya Kant and Bela M Trivedi directed holding of a special round of counselling for 146 fresh seats and allowed the students who have joined the All India Quota AIQ or state quota in round two to participate in itThe bench directed the Director General of Health Services DGHS to invite options from students within 24 hours and complete the process within 72 hours after the cut-off time for the optionsThe bench clarified that all the directions have been issued in exercise of its jurisdiction under Article 142 of the ConstitutionOn Wednesday the top court had directed the Centre to maintain status quo till Thursday in the mop-up round of NEET-PG 2021-22 counselling and asked the Director General of Health Services DGHS to reconsider issues including the decision of adding 146 new seats PTI MNL MNL DV DV

New Delhi Jan 19 PTI The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up state governments for failing to disburse claims to the next of kin of COVID-19 victims and issued a show cause notice to the Andhra Pradesh chief secretary as to why contempt action be not initiated against him The top court asked the chief secretaries of Andhra Pradesh and Bihar government to remain present virtually at 2 PM and explain why the disbursals of ex-gratia amount of Rs 50000 for COVID-19 death are less in their states A bench of Justices MR Shah and Sanjiv Khanna said that it will pass orders at 2 PM and asked the state legal service authorities to reach to the families who have lost their near and dear ones to COVID-19 to facilitate registration and disbursal of claims like it was done during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake The top court said that it rejects the COVID-19 death toll given by Bihar and said that these are not actual figures but government figures We are not going to believe that only 12000 people died in the state of Bihar due to Covid We want your chief secretary to be here virtually at 2 PM the bench told the counsel appearing for the Bihar government The top court was hearing a batch of pleas by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal and intervenors represented by advocate Sumeer Sodhi seeking ex-gratia assistance to family members of COVID-19 victims PTI MNL MNL DV DV

New Delhi Nov 18 PTI The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered registration of a regular case by the CBI into the alleged irregularities in the disinvestment of the governments controlling share in Hindustan Zinc Limited HZL in 2002The top court however allowed disinvestment of the Centres residuary 295 per cent share in the open marketA bench of justices DY Chandrachud and BV Nagarathna said the recommendation of various officials of the CBI for converting the preliminary inquiry of disinvestment of HZL in 2002 into a regular case satisfies the courts conscience that a prima facie case is made outIt took note of the fact that despite recommendation for registration of regular case into the alleged irregularities in the disinvestment in 2002 the preliminary inquiry was closed and directed that the CBI should forthwith register a regular case and the agency shall file its periodic status report to the courtThe bench however directed the Central government that it can disinvest 295 percent of its residuary share in the open market saying that after 2002 the HZL ceased to remain a government companyIt said that the Central government had ceased to be in control of the erstwhile PSU company since its disinvestment of shares in 2002 PTI MNL MNL DV DV
