Chennai Apr 18 PTI Tamil Nadu on Monday recorded 27 new Covid-19 cases witnessing a marginal increase in its active coronavirus infections Chennai recorded the highest with 15 new cases The number of recoveries was 26 according to a bulletin Subsequently the active cases stood at 232 one up from the 231 on Sunday There were no related deaths and the overall fatalities were 38025 The total number of people who tested positive till date was 3453290 The overall tally of those who got discharged stood at 3415033 the bulletin added PTI SA NVG NVG

New Delhi Mar 30 PTI The Supreme Court on Wednesday appointed a former apex court judge as an arbitrator to decide the dispute between Unitech Ltd and the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation APIIC for development of an integrated Vizag cityA bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah named former apex court judge Justice Subhash Reddy as an arbitratorThe direction came on an application filed by Unitech Ltd seeking direction for refund of Rs 270 crore together with interest at 18 per cent annum by the APIIC The counsel for Unitech Ltd told the apex court that APIIC has proceeded on the basis that the development agreement was not ratified by board of directors and therefore not binding APIIC counsel argued before the apex court that Unitech invoked arbitration so it would not be appropriate to issue direction in the from of decree The submission by Unitech that this court should pass a decree for refund with interest cannot be enquired into in absence of adjudication of claim and the defence for the plea of refund We are of the view that ends of justice would be met by appointing a sole arbitrator to arbitrate upon dispute Accordingly we order and direct that Justice Subhash Reddy stands appointed as sole arbitrator to arbitrate upon dispute the bench said On August 1 2007 bids were invited by APIIC in a public private partnership over 1750 acres of land for setting up the Integrated Vizag Knowledge City project at Kapuluppada in Visakhapatnam On 21 September 2007 letter of award was issued in favour of Unitech Ltd and on July 17 2008 the development agreement was executed However the agreement was cancelled for non-implementation of the project Aggrieved by this Unitech invoked the arbitration clause on May 27 2011 and after furnishing notices filed an application before the Andhra Pradesh high court under the arbitration act which is pending before it PTI PKS SA

Chennai Feb 26 PTI Fresh Covid-19 infections active cases and deaths in Tamil Nadu continued to decline on Saturday according to the Health Department There were 480 new cases and two deaths Active cases dropped to 7164 against 8150 on Friday The fresh cases today included a person who returned from Malaysia and one person each from West Bengal and Kerala According to a bulletin 1464 people were cured of the virus With 126 Chennai topped the list of fresh cases followed by Coimbatore 72 and Chengalpattu 55 A number of districts saw single-digit cases five districts had no fresh infections the bulletin said PTI SA NVG NVG

New Delhi Oct 29 PTI The Supreme Court Friday clarified that there is no total ban on use of firecrackers and only those fireworks which contain Barium salts are prohibited A bench of Justices M R Shah and A S Bopanna said however that no authority can be permitted violation of the directions issued by it and allow banned firecrackers under the guise of celebration The apex court further asserted that celebration cannot be at the cost of the others health Under the guise of celebration nobody can be permitted to infringe the right to health of others guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India and nobody can be permitted to play with the life of the others more particularly the senior citizens and the children it said It is made clear that there is no total ban on use of firecrackers Only those firecrackers are banned as directed hereinabove which are found to be injurious to health and affecting the health of the citizens more particularly the senior citizens and the children the bench said Any lapse on part of States agencies and UTs in implementing a ban on firecrackers shall be viewed very seriously the top court said It directed all the statesUnion Territories to give due publicity through electronicprint media and local cable services to make the people aware of the directions issued by the court on manufacture use and sale of banned firecrackers PTI PKS SA
