Chennai Dec 23 PTI The number of Omicron cases of coronavirus in Tamil Nadu jumped to 34 on Thursday and the infected who were asymptomatic were doing well with issues such as giddiness and sore throat the state government said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian said the infected included the contacts of the states first case an air traveller who arrived here from Nigeria via Doha The samples of the persons infected with S-gene drop a possible indicator of Omicron infection had been sent to the Centre earlier after conducting their genome sequencing tests here and 33 of them have been confirmed for the latest variant of the virus he told reporters here A total of 57 such samples had been sent 34 turning positive and the results of the rest were awaited All 34 including the first case are asymptomatic and have giddiness and sore throat and are doing well he said The cases had been under medical observation for quite some time and some of them could soon return negative for the virus and may be discharged he added They are asymptomatic and have minor issues like giddiness and sore throat Subramanian said adding except for two minors aged 16 all the others had been vaccinated Principal Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said we have met them they are almost with nil symptoms There is no need for panic but need peoples cooperation in required in curbing the spread of covid-19 he said PTI SA SS SS
Chennai Oct 26 PTI A special court near here on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a couple to four death sentences double lifer and imposed a fine of Rs six lakh for killing their family members in 2019 After killing his parents and brother with the help of his wife by dousing them in petrol while in sleep and setting them ablaze the accused Goverdhanan had claimed they had died after the AC in the room exploded However circumstantial evidence medical report and the chemical analysis report went against the accused who were pronounced guilty and awarded death penalty on three counts Special Public Prosecutor N Vijayaraj said P Velmurugan District Judge Sessions Court for exclusive trial of Bomb Blast Cases at Poonamallee pronounced the verdict Goverdhanan had been demanding money from his parents for long to start a new business venture and was agitated that his parents did not heed to it In May 2019 the victims were found dead inside their locked house and Goverdhanan blamed an AC explosion for their death and even preferred a police complaint in this regard A DSP-rank official probed the matter and later it emerged the husband-wife duo had poured petrol on Goverdhanans parents and younger brother and set them on fire Vijayaraj said adding there were also cut injuries on one of the victims Factors like the AC machine not exploding but only melting the accused escaping unhurt and other forensic analysis nailed the couple he said adding they broke down upon hearing the sentencing on Tuesday The life imprisonments imposed are to run concurrently and it is also ordered to set off the period already undergone if any the court said PTI SA SS SS
Chennai Sep 17 PTI A 17-year old has been held for allegedly grievously injuring a nine-year old boy for resisting his sexual advances police said on Monday A City Police press release said a Boy Missing complaint was filed by the victims parents after their son went untraceable following which a case was registered Maduravoyal police probing the case received information that a child was found lying unconscious with injuries near a bypass and it turned out to be the missing boy it said Probe revealed that the 17-year old boy tried to force the child to have sex with him and when he resisted the former allegedly attacked him using a stone and fled the place Later when police nabbed the teen he admitted to the crime the release said adding he was produced before a juvenile court and sent to a care home PTI SA SS SS
Chennai Aug 24 PTI A 29-year old man who posed as well-known Tamil actor Arya and duped a Sri Lankan woman of money and his accomplice were arrested on Tuesday police said The action was taken based on a complaint from the woman living in Germany a City Police release said Mohammed Arman posed himself as Arya and connected to the woman through social media He duped her of money after promising to marry her the release said adding an accomplice of the accused person was also apprehended The duo hailing from the city was picked up from Ranipet district by a special team and electronic gadgets including laptop were seized from them the release said PTI SA SS SS
