Min temps in Kashmir remain below freezing point snowfall rain likely from Sunday

Srinagar Dec 22 PTI There was a slight increase in minimum temperatures in most places in Kashmir but they remained below the freezing point meteorological department officials said on Wednesday The department has also forecast three days of snowfall and rain from Sunday in the region There was an improvement in the minimum temperatures on Tuesday night at most of places in the Kashmir Valley on the second day of Chilla-i-Kalan big cold the officials saidSrinagar recorded a low of minus 18 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night a degree up from the previous nightThe city had recorded a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius for two consecutive nights on Saturday and Sunday which is the lowest of the season so farThe resort town of Gulmarg in north Kashmirs Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius a degree up from the previous night the officials saidPahalgam which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra recorded a low of minus 52 degrees Celsius they saidThe mercury in Kupwara in north Kashmir settled at minus 29 degrees Celsius in Qazigund the gateway town to the Valley at minus 3 degrees Celsius and Kokernag recorded a low of minus 19 degrees Celsius the officials saidThe meteorological office has forecast snow spell of greater intensity during December 26 evening to 28 forenoon with main activity on December 27 they saidThe Chilla-i-Kalan which began on Tuesday is the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the ValleyThe chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during this period and most areas especially in the higher reaches receive heavy snowfallThe Chilla-i-Kalan will end on January 31 but the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long Chillai-Khurd small cold and a 10-day-long Chillai-Bachha baby cold PTI SSB MIJ ANB ANB

Srinagar Oct 26 PTI Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday recorded 97 fresh COVID-19 cases which took the tally to 331795 while one fresh death due to the virus was reported in the Union Territory in the past 24 hours officials said Out of the 97 fresh cases 15 were from the Jammu division and 82 from the Kashmir division of the Union Territory they said The officials said Srinagar district recorded the highest number of 36 cases followed by 18 cases in Baramulla district There are 854 active cases in the union territory while the number of recovered patients was 326510 they said The death toll in the union territory due to the pandemic is 4431 as one fresh death was reported in the past 24 hours the officials said Meanwhile they said there were 49 confirmed cases of mucormycosis black fungus in the Union Territory as no fresh case was reported since last evening PTI SSB MIJ ANB ANB
