Guwahati Feb 18 PTI The administration in Assams Kamrup Metropolitan district has cracked the whip on illegal drinking water bottling and packaging plants serving closure notices to several such units over the past two daysThe exercise is being carried out by a task force constituted by Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha an official statement said on FridayIt said numerous public complaints as well as the findings of a magisterial inquiry had brought to fore practises taking place with blatant disregard for law in these plants in the districtNecessary instructions were also passed on to such operators regarding requisite licences to be obtained for operating such businesses the statement said PTI SSG RBT RBT

Guwahati Aug 24 PTI The Assam government has begun verification of rhino horns stored in different treasuries in order to reconcile and destroy those barring the ones linked to court cases or required for scientific purposes officials saidThe process started from the Morigaon treasury on August 18 and 261 rhino horns have been verified so far they saidThe exercise is being conducted by seven zonal committees and a technical panel constituted by the states chief wildlife wardenThe state government is contemplating to reconcile the rhino horns ivory and destruction of the same thereof except for those required as exhibit in court case or as specimens for education awareness and scientific purposes an official release saidOut of the 261 horns verified thus far 241 have been marked for destruction and 18 for preservation it saidThe entire operation is being screened live The last such statewide counting and inspection of rhino horns was conducted in 2016 after questions were raised on the genuineness of the horns stockedA total of 2020 horns were found in 12 treasuries of the state in 2016Assams Kaziranga is home to 2413 one-horned rhinos the worlds largest population of the species according to the last rhino census conducted in 2018The horns are mostly retrieved from rhinos that die of natural causes PTI SSG RBT RBT
