Kolkata Feb 23 PTI Students of Visva-Bharati demonstrating for the reopening of hostels got into a scuffle with varsitys security staff on Wednesday when they tried to enter the central office scaling a boundary wallThe students have been agitating for a week now demanding the reopening of hostels but the vice-chancellor is unresponsive SFI leader Somnath Sow said We have been urging the vice-chancellor to talk to us but he is unresponsive Many students who are not locals are finding it difficult to fund their lodging in hotels as offline classes have resumed Sow saidAs the varsitys security staff did not allow the students to enter the central office a section of them tried to scale the boundary wall he saidMany of us were manhandled by the security staff leading to a scuffle We were heckled by security guards for raising a just demand he addedThe students will continue to demonstrate till the varsity reopens the hostels which are closed since the beginning of the pandemic he saidThe agitating students created trouble and went after the security staff who were doing their job as people in groups are not allowed to enter the central office a spokesperson of the university saidNo decision has been taken on the reopening of the hostels he said PTI SUS SOM SOM
Kolkata Dec 24 PTI The Indian Museum here on Friday began a month-long exhibition of two centuries-old idols of Mahishasura Mardini to commemorate the UNESCO recognition of Durga Puja in KolkataA black stone idol dating back to the 12th century and an ashtadhatu octo-alloy idol of the 19th century were put on display at the museum to celebrate the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage ICH tag for the citys iconic festivalMuseum Director AD Chowdhury told PTI that this was the Indian Museums unique way of commemorating the honour bestowed upon by UNESCOWe have put on display two idols of Mahishasura Mardini for public viewing These idols have not been regularly displayed at the museum in the past he saidWe decided to commemorate the distinction in a way which can make the public aware of our heritage and rich treasures We thought this could be the best way as far as a museum is concerned he addedThe two figurines will be there for public viewing for a month Chowdhury saidFolk artists from the tribal western region of the state will hold performances and a workshop on clay modeling and painting is being organised during the exhibition the official said PTI SUS SOM SOM
