Mumbai Apr 24 PTI A Mumbai court on Sunday rejected the city polices demand for the custody of independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana and remanded the couple in 14-day judicial custody an official said Navneet Rana will be sent to the Byculla womens jail while her husband will be sent to the Arthur Road jail the official said The Mumbai police on Saturday evening arrested Badnera MLA Ravi Rana and his wife Navneet Rana the MP from Amravati in Maharashtra for allegedly creating enmity between different groups The development came hours after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackerays private residence Matoshree here The Ranas were booked under Sections 153 A promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion race place of birth residence language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and 353 assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty of the Indian Penal Code IPC and Section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act violation of prohibitory orders of police officials earlier said Both of them were on Sunday produced before a court in Bandra which sent them to judicial custody for 14 days public prosecutor Pradip Gharat said Charges under IPC Section 124-A sedition are made out against them as they had challenged the government machinery and made remarks against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray the prosecutor said The court will hear their bail application on April 29 he added Advocate Rizwan Merchant representing Ranas said Two separate FIRs were registered against the couple at Khar police station All the charges are baseless and we will apply for bail PTI ZA GK GK
Mumbai Apr 24 PTI The Mumbai police have added the charge of use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty in the FIR registered against independent MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana an official said on Sunday The city police have also registered an FIR against several Shiv Sena workers for protesting outside the residence of Ranas in Mumbai on Saturday he said The police had on Saturday evening arrested the Ranas for allegedly creating enmity between different groups after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackerays private residence Matoshree here According to an official from Khar police station the couple was shifted to Santacruz police lock-up in the night Earlier Ranas were booked under Indian Penal Code IPC Section 153 A promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion race place of birth residence language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act violation of prohibitory orders of police The police later also added IPC section 353 assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty in the FIR registered against Ranas the official said Meanwhile based on a written application submitted by Ranas the Khar police also registered an FIR against Shiv Sena workers under relevant Indian Penal Code IPC sections including rioting and unlawful assembly for protesting outside the couples residence here the official said Navneet Rana who is MP from Amravati in Maharashtra and Ravi Rana MLA from Badnera in Amravati district had submitted a complaint at the Khar police station against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and Sena leader and state Transport Minister Anil Parab accusing them of instigating people to kill the couple Earlier this month Ravi Rana had demanded that Thackeray who heads the Shiv Sena recite the Hanuman Chalisa at his residence on Hanuman Jayanti and announced that if the CM did not do so he would go to Matoshree and recite it On Friday Ravi Rana had said he would visit Matoshree on Saturday But as his announcement drew a strong reaction from Shiv Sena cadres on Saturday morning he announced that he and his wife were cancelling their plan so as not to create any law and order situation ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Mumbai on Sunday But despite their backtracking Sena cadres on Saturday laid a siege to the building in suburban Khar where the couple was staying and said the Ranas would not be allowed to leave until they apologised for insulting Matoshree their temple The Sena workers had also tried to break through barricades and enter the building but were stopped by police PTI ZA GK GK
Mumbai Mar 28 PTI The Mumbai Police have registered 2183 FIRs against motorists for driving on wrong side while 4689 abandoned vehicles have been removed from roads here in the last 20 days an official said on Monday City Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey had recently asked officials to take action against motorists for wrong-side riding and to remove the abandoned vehicles from roads On Saturday 192 FIRs were registered by the city police for wrong-side driving Besides 391 vehicles were removed from roads here in a single day on March 16 the official said Tagging the reports on his Twitter handle Pandey said Our report card for WrongSideDriving and removekhatara from 6th March till 26th March We have a long way to go Will Do A senior police official said for driving in the wrong direction they register the FIRs under Indian Penal Code Sections 279 rash driving and 336 endangering life or personal safety of others It is a bailable offence but we have warned people that if such an act is repeated then their driving licence will be cancelled the official said After Pandey was appointed the Mumbai police commissioner last month he had asked officials in the department to take action against traffic norm violators hawkers and builders who create noise pollution and to remove abandoned vehicles from roads PTI ZA GK GK

Mumbai Mar 24 PTI A 38-year-old man died after a heavy piece of granite fell on his head from a building in Mumbai when he stepped out of his house to meet a friend a police official said on Thursday The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at Mahalaxmi building in Ori Pada locality of Dahisar area he said The victim Kalyan Giri had stepped out of his house and was chatting with his friend when a piece of granite from the building broke and fell on his head the official said The incident was captured in the CCTV cameras installed in the building When Giris friend shouted for help the victims parents came out of their house They took Giri to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission the official said Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 12 Somnath Gharghe said On the basis of primary information we have registered a case against an unidentified person under Indian Penal Code Section 304 culpable homicide but not amounting to murder We are verifying from which floor or flat the stone piece fell An investigation is on into the case PTI ZA GK GK
Mumbai Feb 28 PTI A major fire broke out in a ground-plus-ten floor residential building in Kanjurmarg area of Mumbai on Monday afternoon a fire official said There was no report of any casualty so far he said The blaze broke out in B-wing of the NG Royal Park building located in Kanjurmarg East It was a level-2 major fire and was confined to the 9th and 10th floors of the building the official said The fire brigade got a call at 117 pm about the blaze following which six fire engines four jumbo tankers two water tankers ambulance and other assistance were rushed to the spot the official said Efforts were on to douse the flames he said PTI ZA GK GK
Mumbai Dec 23 PTI An assistant police inspector allegedly abused and assaulted the cashier of a bar in Mumbai for refusing to serve him food in the wee hours of Thursday an official said The CCTV footage of the incident that took place around 1230 am went viral on social media platforms and the bar owner lodged a police complaint against the API Vikram Patil posted at the Vakola police station here The bar owner Mahesh Shetty claimed the policeman first rang up the bar cashier Ramdas Patil asking that he be provided food The cashier told him the kitchen was closed After a few minutes the API entered the bar which is located close to the Vakola police station and allegedly started abusing and assaulting the cashier Shetty said It was 1230 am when he asked for food How can we open the establishment beyond the time limit We have lodged a complaint against the API and will approach top officials to register an FIR he said A senior Mumbai Police official said the incident took place after an argument between the cashier and the API over food We are verifying the facts and action will be taken against the police officer he said PTI ZA GK GK
Mumbai Dec 19 PTI A suspected chemical powder from a refinery fell on the food and vehicles of residents of Mahul village in Mumbai triggering panic in the area officials said on Sunday The incident took place around 11 pm on Saturday when residents of Gawan Pada at Mahul village in suburban Chembur were celebrating a festival outside their homes a fire official said They noticed some powder from the Hindustan Petroleums refinery located nearby falling on their food and vehicles the official said The worried residents immediately alerted local police and the fire department Personnel of the fire department police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reached the spot and immediately contacted officials of the refinery the official said The plant officials were asked to close the work there he said The personnel from the fire department police and the civic body were present in the area till 130 am on Sunday and did not find anything suspicious the fire official said adding that suspected chemical substance stopped falling automatically after some time It was not a poisonous substance After the incident the plant officials were asked to shut the work temporarily and to rectify the problem RCF police stations senior inspector Shrihari Ghavate said We will wait for a report from the factory inspector and chemical pollution controller and on that basis action will be taken if required the police official said PTI ZA GK GK

Mumbai Oct 31 PTI Fashion model Munmun Dhamecha was released from the Byculla womens jail here on Sunday three days after she was granted bail in the cruise drugs case in which she was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau NCB on October 3 The Bombay High Court had on Thursday granted bail to her along with co-accused Aryan Khan the son of actor Shah Rukh Khan and Arbaaz Merchant On Friday afternoon the HC made available its operative order in which it imposed 14 bail conditions on Aryan Khan Merchant and Dhamecha stipulating their release on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh each with one or two sureties of the same amount The release order of Dhamecha was put in the bail box outside the Byculla jail late Saturday evening after the bond process was completed Dhamechas advocate Ali Kaashif Khan on Sunday said She has been released from the jail after completion of all the legal formalities We are now going to file an application before the NCB seeking permission to allow her to go Madhya Pradesh as she hails from there Her co-accused Arbaaz Merchant who is lodged at the Arthur Road jail is yet to be released Aryan Khan who was also lodged in the Arthur Road jail following arrest in the case returned home on Saturday The HC had in its detailed order asked Aryan Khan Merchant and Dhamecha to appear before the NCBs Mumbai office every Friday between 1100 am to 200 pm to mark their presence On October 2 the NCB had raided the Goa-bound cruise ship off the Mumbai coast and claimed to have seized drugs onboard PTI ZA GK GK
