Lucknow Apr 25 PTI The newly elected members of the UP Legislative Council will be administered oath on Tuesday officials said Principal Secretary to UP Legislative Council Rajesh Singh in a statement issued here on Monday said that Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh will administer the oath to the new members at Tilak Hall in UP Vidhan Bhavan Over a month after its resounding victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections the BJP has swept the biennial polls to the states Legislative Council by winning 33 out of 36 constituencies One of three local authority seats the ruling party failed to win was in Varanasi Prime Minister Narendra Modis Lok Sabha constituency where it stood a distant third According to the results declared on Tuesday the BJP won 24 of the 27 seats where polling was held last week In addition the BJP had won nine of the 36 seats unopposed Two independents and a candidate from the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik emerged victorious in the elections The results take the BJP past the halfway-mark in the 100-member House Now it will have 67 members in the upper house of the state legislature Before the polls the BJP had 34 members in the House Besides the BJPs 67 MLCs Samajwadi Party has 17 and the Bahujan Samaj Party has four MLCs in the House The Congress Apna Dal Sonelal and the Nishad Party have one member each in the House The teachers group has two MLCs while the Independent group Nirdal Samooh and Independents have one MLC each Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had vacated his council seat recently while former leader of opposition Ahmad Hassan of the SP died in February this year The voters in the biennial elections are village pradhans members and chairman of block development councils and zila panchayats and corporators in urban areas besides MLAs and MPs The Congress and the BSP did not field any candidate in the Legislative Council elections making it a direct fight between the BJP and the SP PTI NAV KVK KVK

Korba Sep 20 PTI Two men were tied to poles and assaulted allegedly by four persons including two security guards of a private company who accused them of attempting theft in a coal mine area in Korba district of Chhattisgarh police said on MondayA video in which the two victims are purportedly seen tied to different poles under a tin shed and one of them being beaten by two men with sticks went viral on social media on Monday Clothes of the man who is seen being assaulted in the clip were torn and he is heard screaming and begging for mercyThe district administration has ordered a probe into the incidentBased on a complaint by one of the victims and the content of the video three of the four accused involved in the incident have been arrested they saidAccording to the complaint the victims identified as Subhash Ram Sidar 55 and Hira Bahadur 40 natives of Korba town were intercepted by the four accused near a railway crossing in Kusmunda coal mines area on September 17 afternoon when they were returning after witnessing Vishwakarma Puja rituals in a mining facility said Liladhar Rathore Station House Officer Kusmunda police stationOf the accused two were private security guards of a company which deals in construction works in the mining area and two others were their associates he saidThey accused Subhash and Hira of attempting to steal iron items in the mining facility and when the two denied the charge they allegedly tied them to separate poles and brutally thrashed the duo Rathore saidNext day Sidar lodged a complaint at the Kusmunda police station following which police swung into action he saidBased on the video of the incident the accused were identified and three of them Rajesh Singh Rajput 53 Govardhan Kumar Sahu 29 and Ashok Kumar Kashyap 46 were arrested the SHO said adding efforts are on to trace the fourth accusedThe accused were booked under relevant sections of the IPC and further investigation was underway he addedMeanwhile Korba Collector Ranu Sahu on Monday constituted a three- member committee of officials to probe the incident and asked the panel to submit its report within seven days PTI COR TKP RSY RSY
