Mumbai Mar 24 PTI Actor Kangana Ranaut might be a celebrity having professional assignments but she cannot forget that she is an accused in a case a local court has said while refusing to grant her permanent exemption from appearance in a defamation complaint filed by Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar Metropolitan Magistrate R R Khan had on Tuesday rejected Ranauts application seeking permanent exemption from appearance in which she had cited her professional commitments The detailed order was made available Thursday Per contra the accused is dictating her own terms for the trial of this case in the manner she likes Admittedly the accused cannot claim permanent exemption as of right The accused has to follow the established procedure of law and terms and conditions of her bail bonds the court said in its order Magistrate Khan further said that till date the court has approved her exemption pleas for those dates as sought by her for previous hearings without imposing a cost Till date the accused has not appeared with an intent to cooperate with the court for the trial of allegations levelled against her the order said Akhtar filed the complaint in the court in November 2020 claiming Ranaut had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview which allegedly damaged his reputation Ranaut sought permanent exemption from appearance saying she is one of the top most actresses of the Hindi film industry and she needs to travel to different parts of the country and international locations for professional commitments The court however rejected her application and said No doubt being a celebrity the accused Ranaut is having her professional assignments but she cannot forget that she is an accused in this case For the fair progress of the trial her cooperation is essential in the matter It is pertinent to mention here that the accused has built up her mind that her presence in this case is not necessary and her advocate will look after the legal formalities the court said in the order If the accused is permanently exempted at this juncture then the complainant a senior citizen will be seriously prejudiced and there will be no progress in the trial it said Akhtars advocate had opposed the application arguing that Ranaut was showing a casual attitude towards the court The court in its order noted that the case was for the offence of defamation in which the complainant Akhtar is a senior citizen and particulars of the offence are yet to be framed It said Ranaut in the past made several unsuccessful attempts to challenge the earlier orders of the court regarding issuance of process and getting the case transferred to another court the accused has shown her interest in obtaining permanent exemption on the ground of her busy schedules Till date the accused has not appeared for framing of particulars of offence though the matter was specifically kept for her appearance for framing of particulars of offence the order said In his complaint Akhtar claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a coterie existing in Bollywood following the alleged suicide by actor Sushant Singh Rajput Ranaut had later filed a counter complaint in the same court against Akhtar for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation The actor in her complaint against Akhtar said following her public dispute with her co-star the lyricist had called her and her sister Rangoli Chandel to his house with malafide intentions and ulterior motives and then criminally intimidated and threatened her PTI SP GK GK

Mumbai Oct 21 PTI A court here on Thursday rejected Bollywood actor Kangana Ranauts petition seeking transfer of the criminal defamation case filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar The actor had filed the transfer petition before the chief metropolitan magistrate last month saying that she had lost faith in the magistrates court hearing the case as it indirectly threatened her of issuing a warrant if she failed to appear before it in a bailable offence However Akhtar had earlier opposed the petition saying that it was devoid of all merits and is liable to be dismissed at the very threshold The veteran lyricist had alleged that the plea was filed only to delay the proceedings before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate court which is currently presiding over the case After hearing arguments from both the sides the court rejected Ranauts petition However a detailed order is yet to be made available Akhtar 76 had filed the complaint in the court in November last year claiming that Ranaut had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview which allegedly damaged his reputation The complaint is being heard by metropolitan magistrate court Andheri In his complaint Akhtar claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a coterie existing in Bollywood following the alleged suicide by actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June last year Ranaut has also moved a counter complaint in the Andheri court against Akhtar for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation before the metropolitan magistrate court The actor in her complaint against Akhtar said that following her public dispute with her co-star the lyricist had called her and her sister Rangoli Chandel to his house with malafide intentions and ulterior motives and then criminally intimidated and threatened her As per the complaint Akhtar had forced Ranaut to tender a written apology to her co-star PTI AVI NP NP
Mumbai Sep 20 PTI Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut appeared before a Mumbai court on Monday in connection with a criminal defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar and said she had lost faith in the magistrates court as it indirectly threatened her of issuing a warrant if she failed to appear before it in a bailable offence Ranaut also moved a counter complaint in the court against Akhtar for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation and her lawyer informed the court that they had filed an application before chief metropolitan magistrate seeking transfer of hearing into the complaint to another court The actor in her complaint said following her public dispute with a co-star Akhtar had called her and her sister Rangoli Chandel to his house with malafide intentions and ulterior motives and then criminally intimidated and threatened her As per the complaint Akhtar had forced Ranaut to tender a written apology to her co-star She further alleged that Akhtar had threatened her with dire consequences and told her that she would be making her own life miserable by indulging in such a public fight with her co-star who comes from a powerful background and family The words that were used by the accused Akhtar were if you do not say sorry to Hrithik Roshan you will have to commit suicide because they will put you in jail They have found all clues and evidence and they know that the case is completely in their hands the complaint said Earlier Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate R R Khan last week said he will issue a warrant against Ranaut if she fails to appear on the next date of hearing on September 20 in connection with Akhtars complaint against her Ranaut appeared before the court on Monday for the first time since summons was issued to her in February this year and completed the bail formalities As the matter came up for hearing her lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee told that court that Ranaut does not want to proceed with this court in connection with the complaint Siddiquee said they have lost faith in the court as it seems to be biased The court has indirectly threatened her of issuing a warrant on two occasions in a non-cognisable compoundable and bailable offence under which as per law regular presence is not required the lawyer claimed Ranaut has been called before the court without any cause or reason he said He further submitted that till today there is no order as to why she is required to be present regularly for the bailable non-cognisable and compoundable offence Akhtars lawyer Jay Bharadwaj termed Ranauts plea for transfer of complaint to another court as extremely bizzare They have neither given any notice nor a copy of the transfer application to us he said Ranaut in her complaint sought for action to be initiated against Akhtar under Indian Penal Code Sections 383 extortion 384 punishment for extortion 387 putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt 503 criminal intimidation 506 punishment for criminal intimidation and 509 words gestures or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman The actor said Akhtar had no connection with her dispute or personal relationship with the said co-star but still made unwarranted and uncalled for statements against her Ranauts application seeking transfer of the complaint to another court is likely to be taken up for hearing by the chief metropolitan magistrate on October 1 The Andheri metropolitan magistrate posted Akhtars plea for hearing on November 15 Earlier this month the Bombay High Court dismissed a plea filed by Ranaut seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her by the local court on the criminal defamation complaint filed by Akhtar Justice Revati Mohite-Dere had said in the order that there was no procedural illegality or irregularity in the metropolitan magistrates order initiating the proceedings Akhtar 76 had filed the complaint in the court in November last year claiming Ranaut had made defamatory statements against him in a television interview which allegedly damaged his reputation In his complaint Akhtar claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a coterie existing in Bollywood following the alleged suicide committed by actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June last year PTI AVI SP GK GK GK GK
