Mumbai Apr 18 PTI A special court here on Monday extended the judicial custody of Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik till April 22 even as the NCP leader complained of ill health Malik was produced before Special Judge R N Rokade designated to hear cases related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act The NCP leader stepped into the witness box and told the court that he has been unwell due to kidney ailments and that he has a swelling in his legs Malik further said that whenever he complained of pain in his legs the jail authorities only gave him painkillers I want a permanent solution to my medical problems Malik said Maliks lawyer Kushal Mor told the court that the ministers plea filed before the Supreme Court challenging his illegal arrest and seeking immediate release is likely to be heard on April 22 Special Judge Rokade then extended Maliks judicial custody till April 22 Malik was arrested on February 23 by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering probe linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides The NCP leader was in EDs custody till March 7 before he was sent to judicial custody till March 21 which was later extended till April 4 On April 4 his custody was extended again till April 18 PTI SP NSK NSK

Thane Sep 26 PTI A couple here in Maharashtra who lost their 21-year-old son in a road accident in 2018 have decided to use the compensation amount of Rs 2730 lakh to provide education and other facilities to the poor and needy tribal children The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal MACT on Friday heard their application seeking a claim of Rs 50 lakh for their sons death on June 30 2018 Their son died in Bhandup area of the Eastern Express Highway in neighbouring Mumbai when the car in which he was travelling hit a road-divider and jumped on to the other lane where it collided head-on with a container truck coming from the opposite direction Following the intervention of MACT member and District Judge R N Rokade the mans parents both retired from their jobs settled for an amount of Rs 2730 lakh with the cars insurer towards compensation Advocate Pradeep Tillu who represented the couple before the MACT said they have created a trust in the memory of their son and decided to use to claim amount to help the poor and needy children in their education and sports activities The couple said No doubt we are sad that we lost our son but at the same time we want to give back to the society and have set up a trust to help the poor and needy children The couple had earlier donated their sons eyes on the day of his death Meanwhile MACT member Rokade settled 180 accident claims during a Lok Adalat held here on Saturday PTI COR GK GK
Thane Sep 21 PTI The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal MACT in Maharashtras Thane has awarded a compensation of Rs 137 lakh to the family of a 36-year-old man who was killed in a road accident 10 years ago In an order issued on September 8 the copy of which was made available on Tuesday MACT member R N Rokade has directed the owner of the truck involved in the accident and the insurance company to pay the compensation to claimants along with an interest of 8 per cent per annum from the date of filing of the claim While the insurance firm United India Insurance Co Ltd was represented by a counsel truck owner Mohammad Siraj Mohammad Faiozuddin Sheikh of Hyderabad did not appear and the matter was decided ex-parte against him The claimants including the victims wife and two children submitted that Nitin Babulal Yadav was travelling in a car from Pune to Hyderabad in the early hours of December 13 2011 when a truck collided with the four-wheeler on a national highway in Osmanabad district The truck which was being driven in a rash and negligent manner dashed the car due to which the victim sustained grievous injuries and died while undergoing treatment at a civil hospital in Jalkot it was stated A case was subsequently registered against the truck driver at Naldurg police station The claimants informed the tribunal that the deceased who owned a dairy had been the sole breadwinner of the family and used to earn Rs 28960 per month On hearing both sides the MACT held that the claimants were entitled to a compensation The tribunal has directed the two opponents to jointly and severally pay a compensation of Rs 137 lakh including Rs 126 lakh towards loss of dependency Rs 40000 to the widow towards loss of consortium Rs 20000 to each of the children towards loss of parental consortium and Rs 15000 each for loss of estate and funeral expenses PTI COR ARU ARU
