Srinagar Mar 21 PTI Know Jammu and Kashmir is the mantra adopted by the administration of the Union Territory for the ongoing visit of a high-powered industry delegation from the Gulf during which a strong impetus is expected for investments across various sectors including hotels and hospitals a senior official said on Monday Referring to the visit of a 36-member delegation that arrived here on a four-day visit on Sunday to explore investment opportunities Principal Secretary of Industries and Commerce Department of the Union Territory Ranjan Prakash Thakur told PTI that the visit is a good omen for JK focusing on some main sectors to give a fillip to investments and economic development This is a very high-level delegation Hospitals hotels are of their keen interest along with agro-industry IT and horticulture he said adding that the government has taken various steps with a new and futuristic mindset Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick-start investments worth about Rs 35000 crore in Jammu and Kashmir during his likely visit to the Union Territory next month the official said The prime minister will do the ground-breaking of investments worth about Rs 30000-35000 crore during his visit here Thakur said He did not get into the details of the prime ministers programme Thakur said that during the tenure of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha the Union Territory administration has received investments worth about Rs 50000 crore so far for which detailed project reports have been submitted and money has been deposited whereas the total investment stood below Rs 15000 crore in last six decades Thakur an officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service of 1989 batch said there has been a fundamental shift in the policy and Jammu and Kashmir has made a huge leap forward JK is a high focus area now This is our time now and JK needs to develop for its own people There has been a fundamental shift in the policy as well as the implementation An ecosystem has been created and we are taking one step forward every day he said Referring to the visit of the delegation from Gulf countries the principal secretary said that the thinking has to change radically With the visit of the delegation the idea is just to whet the appetite but I am sure the investment will follow he said The idea is to expose Kashmir and clear their confusion about the place The visit is really important because we need investments in hotels and hospitals today for our future We have attracted investments worth more than three times than what JK got in the last 75 years By the end of the year JK will have investments worth Rs 75000 crore Thakur said He said the delegation consists of industrialists involved in the manufacturing of textile cement pharma fibre and cable among others Talking about the steps taken by the government in the last few months to bring JK on the industrial map Thakur said a single-window clearance system has been put in place He said the government has notified a change in the land use policy as well The incentivisation of investments has taken place which is the initial impetus a kick-start JK is one among the top five states in the ease of doing business We have shown that transformation is possible and the ground has been set he said However Thakur emphasised the need to overcome various challenges towards the implementation of the projects on the ground We have to improve the power scenario and we are working on that We have to create road infrastructure and improve accessibility And we have to hold ourselves accountable to deliver he said Thakur also said that the government will increase the number of medical seats by 1100 each year for the next three years PTI SSB HVA HVA

Mumbai Nov 29 PTI Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh on Monday appeared before the commission probing corruption allegations against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh for the first time and told the panel that he couldnt present himself earlier due to his ill health Taking note of Singhs application the Justice K U Chandiwal Commission cancelled the bailable warrant issued earlier against the former Mumbai police commissioner The panel directed Singh to deposit Rs 15000 in the chief ministers relief fund Singh also filed an affidavit through his lawyers Asif Lampwala and Ankul Seth before the single-member commission reiterating that he had nothing to depose and didnt want to be crossed-examined by the probe panel Earlier in the day Singh appeared before the panel which had issued multiple summonses against him seeking his appearance In his application for the cancellation of the warrant Singh stated that ill health and other illness prevented him from appearing physically before the commission earlier Based on the protection from arrest extended by the Supreme Court on November 27 Singh has caused to ensure his presence before the commission also the application said Considering the reason assigned above referring to Singhs application the bailable warrant is cancelled on Singh depositing Rs 15000 in the chief ministers relief fund the commission said In his previous affidavit too Singh had told the commission that he had no further evidence to share other than the information mentioned in the letter addressed to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in March this year The Justice Chandiwal retired commission was formed to probe the allegations of corruption levelled against Deshmukh by Singh In a related development Anil Deshmukhs lawyer objected to the commission over Singh and dismissed police officer Sachin Waze sitting together in another room in the commissions premises Waze has been appearing before the commission for his cross-examination in connection with the case Singh and the witness Waze are sitting together for the last one hour He Singh might influence the witness Deshmukhs lawyer said Justice Chandiwal retired initially said how can it be stopped He later told Waze that its better to sit in this room where the commissions proceeding was taking place to avoid such a situation Waze was arrested in the case of an explosives-laden SUV found near industrialist Mukesh Ambanis residence Antilia in south Mumbai earlier this year and the subsequent suspicious death of businessman Mansukh Hiran Singh who was transferred from the post of Mumbai police commissioner in March in the aftermath of the Antilia bomb scare episode had alleged that Deshmukh asked police officers to collect Rs 100 crore a month from bars and restaurants in the city The panel had earlier fined Singh on multiple occasions for failing to appear before it and also issued a bailable warrant against him Declared absconding by a court here in an extortion case Singh surfaced in public last Thursday after six months and appeared before the Mumbai crime branch to record his statement The Supreme Court has granted him temporary protection from arrest Singh appeared before Thane police on Friday in connection with an extortion case filed against him and some other police officials on the complaint of a local builder The IPS officer is facing at least five extortion cases in Maharashtra PTI AVI GK NSK NSK

Thane Sep 25 PTI The Thane District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered a real estate developer to pay Rs 40000 compensation to a flat buyer for indulging in deficiency in service by way of not handing over the property within the stipulated time The order was issued by the commissions president Milind Sonawane on September 17 the copy of which was made available on Saturday Besides the compensation the commission also asked Sai Raj Builders and Developers and its partners to pay the refund of Rs 163332 to the complainant along with 10 per cent interest from the date of the payment of this amount in January 9 2016 Complainant Chhaya Raju Anands counsel advocate Ashwini Sarjine told the commission that in 2014 the complainant had booked a 450-sq ft flat in the project being developed by Sai Raj Builders at Navali Naka in Ambarnath for a consideration of Rs 3 lakh Till January 2016 she paid Rs 1 63332 and the developer was to give possession of the flat in the next eight months which he has not done so far The complainant sought that the developers be directed either to give the possession of the flat or to refund the amount with interest The commission said in its order that although the complainant has paid substantial amount there was no sign that the developer would give the possession of the flat to her The opponents have committed deficiency in serviceAs they have not completed the project and there is no evidence when it would be completed it would be appropriate to direct them to refund jointly and severally the amount of Rs 163332 to the complainant along with 10 per cent interest from the date of the payment it said It asked them to pay Rs 25000 to the complainant for causing mental and physical harassment and Rs 15000 towards the cost of the legal proceedings PTI COR NP NP NP

New Delhi Aug 25 PTI The Centre on Wednesday hiked the minimum price that mills have to pay to sugarcane growers by Rs 5 per quintal to Rs 290 a quintal for 2021-22 marketing year but ruled out any immediate increase in the selling price of sugar The decision to increase the Fair and Remunerative Price FRP of sugarcane for the 2021-22 marketing year October-September was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs CCEA held here The government had fixed sugarcane FRP at Rs 285 per quintal for the current 2020-21 marketing year Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said the FRP has been increased to Rs 290 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent He said a premium of Rs 290quintal will be provided for each 01 per cent increase in recovery over and above 10 per cent There will be a reduction in FRP by Rs 290quintal for every 01 per cent decrease in recovery To protect interest of farmers Goyal said the government has decided that there would be no deduction where recovery is below 95 per cent Such farmers will get Rs 27550 per quintal for sugarcane in ensuing sugar season 2021-22 in place of Rs 27075 per quintal in current sugar season 2020-21 the minister said The cost of production of sugarcane for the sugar season 2021-22 is Rs 155 per quintal The FRP of Rs 290 per quintal at a recovery rate of 10 per cent is higher by 87 per cent over production cost he said adding that sugar cane farming is more remunerative than other crops The decision will benefit around 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their dependents as well as about 5 lakh workers employed in sugar mills and related ancillary activities When asked if the government will increase the minimum selling price MSP of sugar as FRP has been raised Goyal said Not necessarily He said the government is giving a lot of support to increase sugar exports and ethanol production Considering all of these factors we do not see any reason at the present moment for increasing the sugar selling price he said add added the sugar prices have remained stable in the domestic market He also said the government has ensured a delicate balance between the interest of farmers and consumers as well as of the industry The Centre fixes sugar MSP which is the floor price below which mills cannot sell the sweetener in the market The current MSP is Rs 31 per kg Goyal noted sugar content recovery has been improving as farmers are using modern technology and new agricultural practices Talking about sugar exports the minister said the sugar mills have contracted for export of 70 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year 2020-21 of which 55 lakh tonne have already been shipped and the remaining 15 lakh tonne are in pipeline Goyal said the government has been giving financial assistance to mills for increasing exports To ensure that farmers get cane payment on time the government was promoting sugar exports he said On ethanol Goyal said the use of ethanol for blending in petrol has been increasing over the years In the past three sugar seasons about Rs 22000 crore revenue was generated by sugar mills distilleries from the sale of ethanol to Oil Marketing Companies OMCs In the current sugar season 2020-21 about Rs 15000 crore revenue is being generated by sugar mills from sale of ethanol to OMCs at 85 per cent The minister said ethanol blending in petrol will rise to 20 per cent in the next three years from the current level According to Goyal the revenue from ethanol will increase to Rs 40000 crore per year from the current Rs 15000 crore ensuring that mills pay to farmers in time In the previous sugar season 2019-20 about Rs 75845 crores cane dues were payable out of which Rs 75703 crore has been paid and only Rs 142 crore arrears are pending as per an official statement In the current sugar marketing year 2020-21 out of cane dues payable of Rs 90959 crores Rs 86238 crores cane dues have already been paid to farmers Increase in export and diversion of sugarcane to ethanol is ensuring timely cane price payments to farmers the minister said and added cane growers now do not have to wait for a long to get payment from mills Goyal also lauded the Uttar Pradesh government for clearing all dues of sugar cane farmers for 2017-18 2018-19 and 2019-20 marketing years He further said the dues for the current 2020-21 marketing year would be cleared soon PTI MJH NKD MR MR
