IJMA hopeful that govt will implement Tariff Commission report

Kolkata Sep 18 PTI The Indian Jute Mills Association is hopeful that the government will implement the long due Tariff Commission report after the recent direction by the Calcutta High Court a senior IJMA official said on Saturday The IJMA the lobby body of the jute mills said the Calcutta High Court this month has directed the government to approve the Tariff Commission report and make payments in line with the report within November 30 We are hopeful that after the recent High Court direction the government will implement the Tariff Commission report soon It is long due and still provisional pricing continues Implementation of new pricing will help the industry survive IJMA chairman Raghavendra Gupta told PTI The report was supposed to be implemented by March 31 At present all jute mills are surviving on an ad-hocprovisional price It was given to them in September 2016 by the Jute Commissioners office The mills are suffering Rs 3000-6000 per tonne loss a mill owner and former IJMA office-bearer said In Kharif monsoon season KMS and Rabi monsoon season RMS 2021-22 the Union government has placed an order for the supply of almost 45 lakh bales of jute bags It is feared that industry will fall short of supply as mills would not like to make further losses if the new rates are not implemented in accordance with the Tariff Commission he said Moreover the price of raw jute which had eased to Rs 55000 per tonne after fresh crop started coming had begun to firm up and had crossed Rs 65000 a tonne mills complained With raw jute prices shooting up to Rs 90000 per tonne last crop season due to short production even locals have started hoarding raw jute at their homes hoping to make quick money similar to the previous year Government should intervene before the phenomenon turns more acute mill owners said PTI BSM RG RG
