Tuesday’s UN climate talks were set up for a clash between developed and developing nations over demands that wealthy polluters pay for damages caused by natural disasters. The COP27 conference in Egypt has been dominated by demands that wealthy nations fund developing countries that are least to blame for global warming in order to mitigate lethal and expensive climate impacts. Ministers from some of the most severely affected nations in the world criticized developed nations for failing to do enough, both on this issue and in regard to unfulfilled commitments to provide $100 billion in annual aid for their transitions to a greener economy.
