Srinagar Mar 20 PTI A court here has framed charges against two persons who were arrested for throwing acid on a woman in February in downtown city and the trial will begin from the end of this monthThe two accused were presented before Principal Sessions judge Jawad Ahmad who framed charges under sections 120-B criminal conspiracy and 326-A voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid of the Indian Penal Code IPC officials saidThe trial will start at the end of this month they saidExpressing satisfaction over the development Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Rakesh Balwal said the police will fight this case till the end and ensure that the victim gets justiceOur aim is that this case becomes a milestone in history for a speedy trial and punishment to the accused so that it acts as a deterrent for those harbouring such thoughts or having such tendencies Balwal saidAdvocate Mir Naveed Gul who represents the victim said the charges were framed against the accused persons involved in the acid attack on the 24-year-old womanThe principal sessions judge Srinagar without any delay listed the matter on an urgent basis I appreciate the expeditious hearing of the case and the framing of charges he saidThe charge sheet was prepared in a record time of three weeks by the Jammu and Kashmir Police Balwal was personally monitoring the case and had also constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by Superintendent of Police North Raja Zuhaib Tanveer SDPO Mohammed Yasir Parray SHOs Tasir Hamid Owais Geelani and Sub-Inspector Shahista Mughal were its membersThe charge sheet has been filed against three people -- Sajjad Altaf Rather Mohammed Saleem Kumar and a juvenile against whom the police want to press charges as an adult because of his involvement in the crimeAccording to the charge sheet the juvenile helped the police recover the black glass bottle that was used to throw acid on the victims facePolice had also noticed injury marks on the upper side of the juveniles right hand He was taken to a hospital for examination and doctors opined that the injury was caused by some chemical substanceDuring the course of investigation it also came to light that the victim had rejected the marriage proposal of the accused This angered the accused and he decided to teach her a lesson and conspired to take revenge from the victimThe SIT also recorded separate statements of Rather and the juvenile about the route taken by them Their statements were corroborated by obtaining CCTV footageMobile phone records as well as locations of the accused have also been annexed with the charge sheet to corroborate the conspiracy angle in the caseRather who is the main accused in the case had returned to the medical store where he was working as a salesman after committing the crimeThe victim is undergoing treatment at a Chennai hospital and a businessman-turned-politician is bearing all the expenses PTI SKL DIV
Chennai Feb 28 PTI Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday visited a hospital to enquire about the condition of a 27-year-old Kashmiri woman who was attacked with acid in Srinagar and brought to Chennai for specialised treatment Accompanied by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian Abdullah met the family members of the woman who has lost her eyesight and whose face was disfigured in the attack Three people have been arrested for the acid attack on February 1 which triggered a massive public outrage The case is coming up for trial on March 8 Abdullah who was in Chennai for the release of a book of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin visited the survivor and spoke to the doctors attending to her The Tamil Nadu health minister assured Abdullah the National Conference vice president that he would personally look into the matter and do whatever is best for the woman Abdullah handed over a cheque to the family as his personal contribution towards her medical expenses The woman has undergone six surgeries so far In addition to eye surgeries three skin grafting procedures have been done to reconstruct her face The Jammu and Kashmir Police recently filed a 1000-page charge sheet against the three people -- Sajid Altaf Rather and Mohammad Saleem Kumar alias Tota and a juvenile The police have prayed for treating the juvenile as an adult as per the amended Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act whereby youngsters in the age group of 16-18 can be tried under the Indian Penal Code IPC if they are accused of heinous crimes The accused were charged under sections 120-B criminal conspiracy and 326-A voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid of the IPC We have filed a water-tight charge sheet and we will make a plea to the court for a daily hearing in this case If a daily hearing is not possible we would request the honourable court for a speedy trial Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Rakesh Balwal had said after filing of the charge sheet PTI SKL SMN SMN
