Chennai Apr 23 PTI Learning a language even if it be ones mother tongue will help in ones development Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on Saturday said and called upon the Telugus not to forget their roots Though those living in Tamil Nadu would be learning the regional language they should not forget their mother tongue especially their roots You should learn and speak in Telugu You can come up in life if you learn even in your mother tongue the CJI said while speaking at the 29th anniversary celebrations of World Telugu Federation WTF here He pointed out that he rose up in stature to occupy the highest position in the judiciary by studying in a Telugu medium school Any language for that matter will help in ones development You can learn English Hindi or any other language But being firmly grounded in mother tongue will help to learn other languages easily he said Recalling Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalins request at the function got up here earlier to lay the foundation stone for a 9-storey administrative block of the Madras High Court for making Tamil the official language of the Madras High Court and for establishing a bench of the Supreme Court here the CJI said I feel elated over his Stalins affinity for Tamil You should also imbue similar feeling for your mother tongue he urged He lauded the WTF for its efforts in conducting Telugu language and cultural programmes Chief Justice of Madras High Court Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari was the guest of honour at the event which commenced this evening with a Kuchipudi performance by Uma Murali V L Indira Dutt president WTF A V Sivarama Prasad Secretary General of WTF and D L N Reddy secretary of WTF were among those who spoke PTI JSP SA SA

Chennai Mar 20 PTI Marked by a sense of detachment like a saint late DMK patriarch and his father M Karunanidhi handed him over to police during the infamous Emergency period Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has reminisced in his autobiography Recounting his entry into the Central Prison here following arrest in 1976 Stalin in his autobiography described the jail time as a torture camp that reverberated with the sounds of wailing Though shocking it gave sakthi strength to an ideologically committed person to face anything the Chief Minister said adding That day I got the strength to face anything The Emergency was imposed by the then Indira Gandhi government in 1975 and was in place till 1977 The period was infamous for widespread arrests of opposition political leaders and curtailment of civil liberties Stalins 334-page autobiography in Tamil Ungalil Oruvan One among you Part I was released here recently by Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi Hours after the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by Karunanidhi was dismissed on January 31 1976 Stalin recalled that police arrived at their Gopalapuram residence here looking for him However he was at a nearby town of Mathuranthakam at the time When police officers said they had an order to search the house to ascertain if Stalin was available or not Karunanidhi told them by all means and informed them that his son was out of town and would be back home the next day according to Stalin Also Karunaidhi offered himself to be arrested he stated The Chief Minister recalled that he and others had an apprehension that Thalaivar party chief Karunanidhi could be arrested but added that the jail breeze was blowing towards me When he arrived home the following day on February 1 1976 Stalin said his mother Dayalu Ammal and wife Durga were weeping but Thalaivars stentorian voice advising that one should be prepared for all kinds of sacrifices in public life pacified the family members Be ready police is looking for you Stalin quoted his father and party chief Karunanidhi as telling him Later police officers arrived after Karunanidhi informed them over phone about Stalin getting back home Stalin is here take him Karunanidhi told police officials The Chief Minister said since he was arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act MISA he was not sure how long the incarceration would last Stalin said though his father had been the chief minister of the state for years till the governments dismissal there was not even a trace of authority when he dealt with police Like an ascetic with a sense of detachment his father Karunanidhi sent him to jail Stalin said Karunanidhi had absolutely no regret that his son was going to jail the Chief Minister said Karunanidhis face at that moment conveyed a sense that like many DMK members at the time his son Stalin too was going to jail Describing that many armed personnel were on guard at the fortified prison entrance when he was led into the jail he said that scenario would make one wonder whether the person being jailed was a terrorist I will recount the wail the blood curdling scenes from the jail in the second party of his autobiography I will take you also into the prison I am waiting at the entrance of the jail You too wait Stalin said dramatically ending the first part of his autobiography Born on March 1 1953 Stalin was about 23 years old at the time of his arrest in 1976 He has held various positions in the DMK and eventually became party chief in 2018 He became an MLA for the first time in 1989 from Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai and was re-elected thrice from the same segment In 1996 he was elected Mayor of Chennai Corporation and re-elected in 2001 However he had to exit with the AIADMK capturing power which enacted a law that barred elected representatives from also holding local body positions In 2006 he became the Municipal Administration Minister in the DMK government under Karunanidhi and went on to become the Deputy Chief Minister in 2009 Under his stewardship the DMK captured power in 2021 PTI VGN HDA HDA

Chennai Sept 25 PTI AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam on Saturday sought Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalins immediate intervention to avert an imminent third wave of coronavirus by ensuring strict adherence of COVID-appropriate behaviour among the people Urging the State government not to give room for the third wave especially in the wake of National Institute of Disaster Management warning of the third wave in October Panneerselvam said the COVID-19 vaccination appeared to have emboldened the people Though the government imposed restrictions the festive season is driving the people to shops Retailers have thrown social distancing norms to the wind Even streets near the shops and business establishments are teeming with people as was witnessed during the pre-COVID days said Panneerselvam quoting media reports Week-ends too bustled with activity he said As of September 1 a total of 1509 people were infected with the virus and the cases increased to 1745 on September 23 - an increase by 236 in 23 days Similarly the fatalities due to the virus rose to 27 from 20 during this period Although this may not be alarming the increase in cases may cause apprehension among the people of a possible third wave the former Chief Minister said Therefore the government should enforce strict restrictions like preventing over-crowding adhering to social distancing in shops and avoiding crowding in commercial centres I urge the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to immediately intervene and make the public aware of the need for adherence to COVID-appropriate behaviour Panneerselvam said Apart from monitoring the movement of people on roads public should be made to wear masks and maintain social distancing he added JSP NVG NVG
