New Delhi Dec 24 PTI The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Friday launched a revised protocol of rating garbage-free cities The revised protocol -- Azadi75 Star Rating Protocol of Garbage Free Cities-Toolkit 2022 -- is aligned with priorities of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 20 with higher weightage being allotted to door-to-door collection of garbage source segregation waste processing and dumpsite remediation The ministry said in a statement that after seeing the impact star rating certification has made to improve on-ground waste management scenario of the cities the release of funds has been made conditional subject to an urban local body ULB achieving at least 1-star certification To ensure every ULB participates in the star rating exercise to get GFC Garbage Free Cities certified and get central funds it was felt necessary to revamp the existing GFC protocol and make the assessment process simpler while retaining its robustness so that every ULB is motivated to apply for the GFC certification the ministry saidUnder the revised protocols the earlier 25 componentsindicators have now been reduced to 24 of which only 16 indicators are mandatory for 1-star and 3-star levels The remaining eight indicators are aspirational in nature and will be relevant for 5-star and 7-star aspirants The multi-step calculation of the previous GFC protocol has now been changed to a single step marking which will help ULB to easily self-assess themselves for applying it said The entire process of applying for certification and subsequent assessment have been simplified and made completely digital paperless and new components pertaining to IEC capacity building revenue from sale of waste by-products have been added to encourage cities to build an ecosystem to strengthen the waste management system the statement said PTI MAH SMN

New Delhi Nov 18 PTI President Ram Nath Kovind will honour the awardees of Swachh Survekshan 2021 -- the sixth edition of the annual cleanliness survey -- on November 20 the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said on Thursday In a statement the ministry said that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modis vision of a garbage-free India under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 20 cities certified under the star rating protocol for garbage-free cities will also be awarded at the ceremony The Swachh Amrit Mahotsav being organised on Saturday will also pay tribute to sanitation workers by recognising top performing cities under the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge earlier initiated by the ministry it stated The ministry said that from surveying 73 major cities in 2016 the sixth edition of Swachh Survekshan covers 4320 cities making its the worlds largest urban cleanliness survey The success of this years survey can be gauged through the unprecedented number of citizen feedback received this year -- over 5 crore a marked increase from last years 187 crore The 2021 edition was conducted in record time of 28 days despite several on-ground challenges owing to the COVID pandemic according to the statement Talking about the Swachh Survekshan 2021 the ministry said that there have been significant on-ground improvements in performance of states and cities as compared to the previous year For example six states and six Union territories have shown overall improvement ranging between five and 25 per cent in their overall ground level performance over last year it said adding that more than 1100 additional cities have started source segregation and nearly 1800 additional urban local bodies have started extending welfare benefits to their sanitation workers More than 1500 additional urban local bodies have notified a ban on the use sale and storage of non-biodegradable plastic bags In all more than 3000 ULBs have notified this ban All North East states have shown significant improvement in their citizens feedback yet another testimony to how the mission is reaching out to every citizen including in far flung areas the ministry said On October 1 Prime Minister Modi had launched the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation asserting that these missions were aimed at making the cities garbage free and water secure The ministry said that over the last seven years the Swachh Bharat Mission has reached all corners of the country changing the lives of countless citizens with its people first focus The mission has transformed the sanitation space in urban India by building over 70 lakh toilets providing safe and dignified sanitation solutions for all The Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban has prioritised the needs of women transgender communities and persons with disabilities divyangs the statement added PTI BUN SMN SMN

New Delhi Sep 30 PTI Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the second phases of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation on Friday his office said In line with the vision of the prime minister SBM-U 20 and AMRUT 20 have been designed to realise the aspiration to make all cities garbage free and water secure the Prime Ministers Office PMO said in a statement on Thursday Modi will launch the two initiatives at 11 AM at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre here it said These flagship missions signify a step forward in the march towards effectively addressing the challenges of rapidly urbanising India and will also help contribute towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 the statement said Union Minister for Housing Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri Minister of State for Housing Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore as well as ministers of urban development of states and union territories will also be present on the occasion SBM-U 20 envisions to make all cities garbage free and ensure grey and black water management in all cities other than those covered under AMRUT make all urban local bodies open defecation free plus and those with a population of less than one lakh as open defecation free plus thereby achieving the vision of safe sanitation in urban areas The mission will focus on source segregation of solid waste utilising the principles of 3Rs reduce reuse recycle scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management the statement said The outlay of SBM-U 20 is around Rs 141 lakh crore it said AMRUT 20 aims at providing 100 per cent coverage of water supply to all households in around 4700 urban local bodies by providing about 268 crore tap connections and 100 per cent coverage of sewerage and septage in 500 AMRUT cities by providing around 264 crore sewer or septage connections which will benefit more than 105 crore people in urban areas the PMO said AMRUT 20 will adopt the principles of circular economy and promote conservation and rejuvenation of surface and groundwater bodies it said The mission will promote data-led governance in water management and technology sub-mission to leverage the latest global technologies and skills it said Pey Jal Survekshan will be conducted to promote progressive competition among cities The outlay of AMRUT 20 is around Rs 287 lakh crore the statement said SBM-U and AMRUT have contributed significantly to improve urban landscape during the last seven years PMO said The two flagship missions have augmented the capacity to deliver basic services of water supply and sanitation to the citizens the statement said Swachhta has become a jan andolan today all urban local bodies have been declared open defecation free and 70 per cent solid waste is being scientifically processed now the statement said AMRUT has been ensuring water security by adding 11 crore household water tap connections and 85 lakh sewer connections thus benefiting more than 4 crore people PTI ASK ZMN ZMN
