New Delhi Apr 22 PTI The two terrorists killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu on Friday attacked the personnel with heavy fire during the crucial early morning shift-change time of CISF men at a checkpost officials saidThe fidayeen or suicide bombers sprayed a volley of bullets in a burst-fire mode from their assault weapons and lobbed grenades at the security personnel at the picket deployed near the Chaddha camp in the Sunjwan area of the district where the Army also has a large installationThe CISF men present on the spot undertook an immediate action and retaliated the attack due to which the terrorists could not reach the main cordon of the security forces that was present in the areaHad they succeeded and were not forced to take shelter in a nearby residential area the casualty among the forces could have been much more CISF Deputy Inspector General DIG for operations and chief spokesperson Anil Pandey told PTIThe two terrorists were killed in the ensuing encounter with the security forcesAnother officer said a team of 15 Central Industrial Security Force CISF personnel onboard a static private bus was just about to take charge from those who were finishing their night duty when the attack took place around 425 amThe bus driver ran away after the terrorists launched heavy gunfire and lobbed grenades even as the security personnel quickly took position and retaliated he saidA cordon-and-search operation is being carried out in the area for the last two-three days and the CISF team was part of it on FridayWe had inputs that two-three fidayeen attackers of the Jaish-e-Mohammed could be lurking around in the area the second officer quoted above saidCISF Assistant Sub-Inspector S P Patel 58 was also killed in the attack while six other personnel of the paramilitary force and a few others were injuredPatel hailed from Satna district of Madhya PradeshThe CISF has deployed 13 companies or about 1200 personnel on internal security duties in Jammu and Kashmir and those who came under the attack belong to company number 757 based in Bhilai in Chhattisgarh a third officer saidThe terror attack came two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Samba in the Jammu region of the Union Territory of Jammu and KashmirThis will be Modis first visit to Jammu and Kashmir other than border areas since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state and its bifurcation in August 2019The prime minister had celebrated Diwali with Army jawans in Rajouri on October 27 2019 and in the Nowshera sector of the Jammu division on November 3 2021 PTI NES RC

New Delhi Jan 21 PTI Asserting that terrorism cannot be justified Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi on Friday said listing and delisting of individuals and entities under the UN sanctions regime must be done objectively and not for political or religious considerations Addressing the International Counter Terrorism Conference 2022 organised by the Global Counter Terrorism Council Lekhi called for a collaborative approach to deal with terrorism and stressed the need for summoning political will to combat the menaceWe need to summon the political will to combat terrorism and not allow terrorism to be justified and terrorists be glorified she said Terrorists are terrorists We must reform the working methods of the committees dealing with sanctions and counter-terrorism Transparency accountability and effectiveness are the need of the day she saidLekhi said that exclusivist thinking must be firmly discouraged as it divides the world and harms social fabricSuch approaches facilitate radicalization and recruitment by breeding fear mistrust and hatred among different communities she saidListing and delisting of individuals and entities under the UN sanctions regimes must be done objectively and not for political or religious considerations she saidLekhi said that linkages between terrorism and transnational organised crime must berecognised and addressed vigorously In combating terror financing Financial Action Task Force FATF should continue to identify and remedify the weaknesses in anti-money laundering and counterterror financing frameworks she said Lekhi also called for ensuring adequate funding to UN counter terrorism bodiesFor three decades now India has faced a proxy war by our neighbour she said in an obvious reference to PakistanWe have denounced all use of terrorist proxies and emphasised on the importance of denying any logistical financial or military support to such activities which could be used to launch acts of terrorism on foreign soil This has been our constant stand Lekhi said We follow zero tolerance toward acts of terrorism and unequivocally we have been condemning terrorism in all forms and manifestations including cross border terrorism Lekhi asserted PTI ASK TIR TIR
