Jammu Oct 30 PTI A search operation to track down a group of hiding terrorists entered the 20th day on Saturday in the forest belt of Jammu and Kashmirs twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri where nine soldiers were killed in two separate attacks officials said The operation in Bhatti Durrian in Mendhar along with Surankote forest in Poonch district and nearby Thanamandi in Rajouri started on October 11 they said A Pakistani terrorist who was moved from the Kot Bhalwal Central Jail in Jammu to Mendhar on police remand for questioning in connection with the ongoing operation was killed when the security forces accompanying him to identify a hideout came under fire from hiding terrorists on October 24 The contact with the hiding terrorists was only established twice on October 11 at Surankote and Thanamandi and again at Bhatti Durrian on October 14 resulting in the killing of nine security force personnel including two Junior Commissioned Officers JCOs Five of them were killed in Surankote and four in Mendhar After the firing on October 24 in Bhatti Durrian which left the Pakistani terrorist killed there was no contact with the hiding terrorists even as a massive joint search operation by the army and the police continued and a hideout was busted leading to the recovery of an AK assault rifle some ammunition and other articles such as food blankets and shoes An army officer said there was no breakthrough against the holed-up terrorists who are avoiding direct contact with the search parties and are on the run taking advantage of thick foliage natural caves and difficult terrain The entire forest area is under tight security cordon and the operation to neutralise the terrorists is going on the officer said The officials said smoke was seen billowing from deep inside the forest at a few places after dry grass caught fire during the ongoing operation The fire however was put off by the search parties Over a dozen persons including two women were detained so far for questioning after it came to light that they allegedly provided logistic support including food and shelter to the terrorists the officials said Meanwhile traffic between Bhimber Gali and Jera Wali Gali in Mendhar along the Jammu-Rajouri highway remained suspended as a precautionary measure for the 15th day on Saturday in view of the ongoing operation Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region have witnessed a rise in infiltration attempts since June this year resulting in the killing of nine terrorists in separate encounters PTI TAS SMN SMN

Jammu Oct 17 PTI Three persons including a mother-son duo were detained for questioning during an ongoing search operation in the forest belt of Jammu and Kashmirs Poonch and Rajouri border districts where nine soldiers were killed in two separate gunfights with terrorists over the past week officials said on SundayFive Army personnel including a junior commissioned officer JCO laid down their lives in a fierce gunfight during a counter-insurgency operation in Surankote forest on Monday Four soldiers including another JCO died in another encounter in the Mendhar sector on Thursday eveningA man along with a 45-year-old woman and her son all residents of Bhatta Durrian forest were taken into custody for questioning on the suspicion of giving logistic support to terrorists the officials saidIt was a matter of investigation whether they provided food and shelter to the terrorists voluntarily or at gunpoint they saidThe officials underlined that the area is mountainous and the forest is dense which makes the operation difficult and dangerousSo far contact with hiding terrorists was established thrice -- first on October 11 in Poonchs Surankote which was followed by another exchange of fire between the security forces and the fleeing terrorists in the adjoining Thanamandi forest in Rajouri district the same day but the ultras managed their escape in both the encountersThe third encounter took place in the Nar Khas forest in the Mendhar area of Poonch on Thursday eveningThe presence of terrorists in the forest area connecting Poonch and Rajouri was observed two-and-a-half months ago and accordingly tactical operations were launched to track them down Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajouri-Poonch range Vivek Gupta said on SaturdayA joint security grid was tracking different groups of terrorists but sometimes operations take time depending on the topography of the area Contact with the terrorists was established thrice this week based on intelligence inputs the officer saidThe terrorists are holed up and the joint forces are on the job to take the operation to the logical conclusion he addedOfficials said the entire forest area from Mendhar to Thanamandi remains under a strict cordon and a massive search operation is on to neutralise the terrorists moving from one place to another in an attempt to escape the dragnetThe Army has deployed para-commandos and a helicopter was also seen hovering over the forest area for surveillance on SaturdayOfficials said the traffic between Mendhar and Thanamandi along the Jammu-Rajouri highway remained suspended for the third day on Sunday in the wake of the ongoing operationRajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region have witnessed a rise in infiltration attempts since June this year Nine terrorists have been killed in separate encounters PTI TAS NSD NSD
