Thiruvananthapuram Apr 25 PTI Even though other States are witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases there was no need for any concern in Kerala said State Health Minister Veena George on Monday During a high-level COVID-19 evaluation meeting George said instructions have been given to the authorities to closely monitor the situation in the districts There is no need for concern in Kerala but we will continue to remain vigilant since other States are reporting an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases Instructions have been issued to closely monitor the situations in the districts Only Kochi has witnessed a slight increase in cases the Minister said in a release She said the district authorities have been instructed to inform the State-level authorities in case of formation of COVID clusters or an increase in the number of cases in a particular region George also gave directions to strengthen the vaccination process The Minister said there is no need for concern in Kerala and there was no cluster in the State Kerala reported 255 cases today while 325 recovered from the disease Currently there are 1812 people under treatment she said The Minister said awareness campaigns would be stepped up and wearing masks is a must PTI RRT KH NVG

Thiruvananthapuram Jan 20 PTI The Kerala government on Thursday imposed fresh restrictions in the state as a preventive measure to contain the rising number of COVID-19 cases A high-level COVID review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan virtually from the United States decided that only essential services should be allowed on the next two Sundays --January 23 and 30 The meeting also decided to allow working women with children below the age of two cancer patients and seriously ill persons to work through the work from home system It directed institutions including businesses malls beaches and other tourist places like theme parks to ensure no gatherings take place and operate strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols Restrictions will be imposed at district level on the basis of the number of people admitted to hospitals the government said and authorised the Disaster Management Authority to divide the districts into three groups A B and C In the districts fall under A category all social cultural religious political and public events and weddings and funerals can be attended by up to 50 people No such gatherings will be allowed in the B and C category districts In such areas religious worship should be conducted online only and a maximum of 20 people will be allowed for weddings and funerals Movie theaters swimming pools and gyms are not allowed to function in C category districts All classes including tuition centers -- except undergraduate and postgraduate level final year classes besides 10 and 12 classes-- are allowed online only in C category districts However residential educational institutions are allowed to operate on a bio-bubble model The decision comes in wake of rising cases of infection in the state which logged 46387 fresh COVID-19 cases today the highest ever single day spike in the infections Confirming that Kerala is witnessing a third wave of COVID-19 Kerala Health Minister Veena George has cautioned people against the super-spread of the pandemic and said both Delta and Omicron variants of the virus are contributing to the ongoing unprecedented surge in daily cases PTI TGB ROH ROH

Thiruvananthapuram Jan 19 PTI Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday cautioned people against the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the state during the third wave and said both Delta and Omicron variants of the virus are contributing to the ongoing unprecedented surge in daily cases Though its severity is lesser Omicron variant has the potential to spread the disease 5-6 times more than the Delta variant and so it should not be taken lightly Every single person should adhere to COVID protocol strictly to keep the pandemic under control she told reporters here George also warned of stringent action against those unleashing false propaganda regarding the pandemic and vaccination through social media platforms Stating that a section of people are spreading lies like Omicron is a natural vaccine and so it was not dangerous to contract the infection she said such campaigns were baseless Whatever be the variant the basic characteristics of the novel coronavirus were the same and people should take extra care to keep the disease at bay the minister said Delta variant was the reason for more cases during the second wave The third wave happened before it was completely over Now both Delta and Omicron are contributing to the surge in COVID cases George said Making it clear that the infectivity was very high these days she said compared to the second wave five percent more cases were expected during the third wave Stressing the need to follow health protocols without any fail in the present circumstance the minister said vaccination was a defence against the infection so everyone should take the jab at the earliest Officials should take special precaution to avoid cluster formations in their respective institutions Urging people to avoid unnecessary hospital visits she said aged people and those having co-morbidities should take more care Rubbishing news reports stating that there was scarcity of essential medicines in the state she said the health department was fully prepared to tackle the situation and the slight rush witnessed by hospitals of late was natural There are 3107 ICU beds in government hospitals across the state while 7468 are there in private sector health facilities There are 2293 ventilator beds in government hospitals and 2432 in private hospitals she added The minister also urged the support of everyone cutting across political lines and other differences to deal with the situation and contain the disease effectively PTI LGK LGK HDA HDA

Thiruvananthapuram Jan 18 PTI COVID-19 infections in Kerala on Tuesday witnessed a steep rise as the state reported 28481 new positive cases taking the infection count to 5407312 Kerala had reported 22946 cases on Monday State Health Minister Veena George said the state had tested 80740 samples in the last 24 hours and there are over 142 lakh active COVID-19 cases in the state On Tuesday Kerala reported 122 deaths taking the toll in the state to 51026 Among todays fatalities 39 were recorded over the last few days and 83 designated as COVID-19 deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and the directions of the Supreme Court Currently there are 142512 active COVID-19 cases in the state out of which only 34 per cent are admitted to hospitals the Health department said in a release Among the districts Thiruvananthapuram reported 6911 cases followed by Ernakulam with 4013 and Kozhikode with 2967 Out of those found infected today 165 reached the state from outside while 27522 contracted the disease from their contacts The sources of infection of 579 are yet to be traced As many as 215 health workers are also among the infected Meanwhile 7303 people recovered from the infection on Tuesday taking the total cured in the state to 5236013 The minister also informed that 998 per cent 26657881 of the targeted population has been administered with the first dose of vaccine while 83 per cent 22061640 have received both the doses PTI RRT RRT SS SS
