New Delhi Mar 26 PTI Aiming to clean the Yamuna river in Delhi in the next two years and provide 24X7 water supply to all households by 2025 the Delhi government has doubled the outlay for water and sanitation to Rs 6710 crore in the Budget 2022-23 The allocation for water and sanitation is 104 per cent more than Rs 3274 crore earmarked in 2021-22 Presenting the budget in the Assembly Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said all the drains falling into the Yamuna will be checked and sewage treated either by taking it to STPs or it will be converted into clean water by in-situ treatment All these plans are progressing at a rapid pace And in two years the Yamuna in Delhi will be completely cleaned It is the resolution of the Delhi government that not even a drop of dirty water should fall in the Yamuna from the side of the people of Delhi he said Earlier Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said the river will be cleaned by 2025 Advancing the deadline for the cleaning of the Yamuna in Delhi Water Minister Satyendar Jain had on Tuesday said the river will be completely cleaned by December 2023 and not 2025 All the wastewater in Delhi will be tapped in the next six months and all areas will be linked to the sewer network in the next 15 months he had said at a virtual session organised by Assocham We will clean the Yamuna by December 2023 and not 2025 All the drains will be completely cleaned I am confident We will invite you all to take a dip in any stretch of the river in Delhi he had said Sisodia said that all the unauthorised colonies in the capital will be connected to the sewer network by the end of this year According to government data sewer lines have been laid and commissioned in 706 of the 1799 unauthorised colonies in the capital and the work is in progress in 448 others The 22-km stretch of the river between Wazirabad and Okhla which is less than 2 per cent of its length of 1370 km from Yamunotri to Allahabad accounts for around 80 per cent of the pollution load in the river Untapped wastewater from unauthorised colonies and jhuggi-jhopri clusters and poor quality of treated wastewater discharged from STPs and common effluent treatment plants are the main reasons behind high levels of pollution in the river At least 29 per cent of the sewage generated in Delhi in the financial year 2021-22 fell into the Yamuna untreated Sisodia also said the availability of drinking water in Delhi has increased by 10 per cent -- from 915 million gallons a day to 985 MGD Better management of water coming to Delhi from outside and better harvesting of rainwater will ensure round-the-clock water supply in the coming three years he said The deputy chief minister said the scheme of providing 20 kilolitres of drinking water a month free to the people of Delhi will continue this year as well On an average 650 lakh consumers are availing the benefit of the scheme which was started in 2015 PTI GVS SMN SMN

New Delhi Mar 22 PTI Delhi Water Minister Satyendar Jain Tuesday said the Yamuna river in the national capital will be completely cleaned and made fit for bathing and propagation of fish by December 2023 All the wastewater in Delhi will be tapped in the next six months and all areas will be linked to the sewer network in the next 15 months he said at a virtual session organised by Assocham We will clean the Yamuna by December 2023 and not 2025 All the drains will be completely cleaned I am confident We will invite you all to take a dip in any stretch of the river in Delhi he said The Yamuna and all the drains in Delhi will be so clean that you will find fish in the water Jain added The minister also said that in the next five to 10 years Delhis groundwater table will be as good as it was 50 years ago We conducted an experiment on 25 acres of land at Palla on the northern outskirts of the capital city near the Delhi-Haryana border It proved successful and we are replicating it now he said The Palla project was a part of the Delhi governments endeavour to augment the citys water supply The three-year pilot project which started in 2019 involved retaining excess Yamuna water in shallow reservoirs on the floodplains during the monsoon season The government had created a 25-acre pond on the floodplains of the Yamuna to retain floodwater and installed 33 piezometers to ascertain the rise in groundwater levels PTI GVS RCJ RCJ

New Delhi Mar 17 PTI The plantation undertaken in Delhi under the city governments Greening Delhi Mission since 2016 has ameliorated degraded sites and the Yamuna bank which were left fallow the Forest Research Institute Dehradun has said in a report The FRI whichconductedan audit of sapling plantation undertaken from 2016 to 2019 said the plants will act as bio-remedial agents which will be helpful in controlling water pollution at the Yamuna bank Under Greening Delhi Mission the government of NCT ofDelhi has taken up plantations on available vacant lands in three forest divisions The plantation started in 2016-17 It is encouragingthat this plantation programme has proved the importance of the potent capacities of differentspecies in ameliorating degraded sites and Yamuna bank which were hitherto left fallow the audit report readThis result would definitely persuade others to think for the bio-remediation of large tracts adversely affected due to inflow of industrial polluted water and sewerage in Delhi it saidThe FRI noted that the encouragement of large-scale afforestation as part of the mission will definitely improve ecology ameliorate the environment and augment the livelihood of the people in the national capitalAccording to the audit report released earlier this month 72 per cent to 81 per cent of the saplings planted in Delhi between 2016 and 2019 have survivedThe government will also ask the Dehradun-based institute to conduct an audit of plantations undertaken in the last two yearsEnvironment Minister Gopal Rai had said while releasing the reportThe survival rate stood at 8021 per cent in the North division In the West division 785 per cent of the saplings survived in the Alipur range and 7568 per cent in the Najafgarh rangeIn the South division the survival rate was 72 per cent in Mehrauli 76 per cent in Asola Bhatti Phase I and 8133 per cent in Phase 2Delhis green cover has increased from 20 per cent of its geographical area in 2013 to 2306 per cent in 2021The National Forest Policy aims at bringing a minimum one-third of Indias total geographical area under green cover The green cover should be at least 66 per cent of the total area in hilly regions and 20 per cent in the plains PTI GVS ANB ANB
