During investigation, the suicide note allegedly left behind by the 17-year-old was recovered. The note read, “I should be the last girl who dies in Karur district because of sexual harassment. I am scared to say who the cause of this decision of mine is. I wanted to live on this earth for long and help others, but now I have to leave this world so soon.”
The girl also added that she loved her family and apologised for taking this extreme step.
This is the second such student suicide in the state. Last week, a 17-year-old girl killed herself in Coimbatore, alleging sexual harassment by a school teacher.
On November 11, a 17-year-old girl died by suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The Class 12 student was allegedly sexually assaulted repeatedly by a teacher at her school, leading to severe stress that eventually resulted in her suicide.
The girl’s mother alleged that the principal of the school did nothing even when she informed about the alleged sexual assault. Instead, the principal reportedly said that it was not serious and “only like someone bumping into her while travelling in a bus”.
As a result, several organisations carried out protests and demanded that the principal be arrested for “trying to hide the atrocity”. The girl’s family said they will only accept the body once the principal is arrested.
Finally, on Sunday, the police arrested the principal under sections of the Pocso Act and the family took their child’s body to perform the last rites. The parents broke down and wept on seeing the body.
