Employers in the labor market are increasing wages and offering several incentives as employees are quitting low-paying jobs to join lucrative positions. Here’s all about the great resignation in the US.
What is the Great resignation?
In the US, a record 4.5 million people quit their jobs in November. Previously, in September 2021, over 4.4 million people left their jobs, according to the US Department of Labor. The major loss of jobs was in the leisure and hospitality industry. Where over 1 million people quit their jobs in November alone. As compared to last year, 60 percent more employees from restaurants, hotels, and bars quit their jobs in 2021. According to data, the great resignation is increasing despite the tight labor market.
Employers are increasing wages, providing incentives and housing as employees are quitting low-paying jobs in search of lucrative jobs. According to Liz Wilkie, the chief economist at Gusto, a payroll services firm, the quitting rate in November was humongous. He also explained that it is a reflection of the momentum and recovery of the economy. According to the firm’s reports, the rate is the same for December as several people left their jobs in December. According to Gusto’s client report, the highest turnover is in low-paying industries where employees are looking for jobs with more pay, benefits, and flexibility.
About 4.3 million people became entrepreneurs
As a record of 4.5 million people quitting their jobs, the economy hired about 6.7 million workers according to Heidi Shierholz. Shierholz is the former chief economist at the Labor Department. Currently, she is the president of the Economic Policy Institute. “People who quit are taking other jobs, not leaving the workforce,” revealed Shierholz. Wilke’s study also noted that with the rising infections adding to 1 million new cases in the US, about 4.3 million people became entrepreneurs. People are looking for alternative careers while juggling childcare and schooling with work.
Additionally, the rising number of new cases may also be one of the reasons behind Americans stepping down from their regular jobs. As per the St.Louis Federal Reserve bank, 3.3 million Americans retired between January 2020 and October 2021.
