The new Superman has only been in charge for a short time. But he already knows which battle will define him as a superhero. Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, is written by Tom Taylor with art by John Timms and colors by Gabe Eltaeb. In it, Jonathan Kent, the son of Kal-El, takes over as the Man of Steel. He may be young and inexperienced in comparison to his father. But his greatest battle is yet to come – and he knows it.

Jonathan Kent is a recent addition to the Superman mythos, first debuting in Convergence: Superman #2 six years ago. He’s evolving into a hero with all of Clark Kent’s talents and abilities, sans some significant experience. Nonetheless, he aspires to follow in his father’s footsteps as a hero for the rest of humanity. He is standing for “truth, justice, and a better world,” as he puts it.

More about the new Superman

Jonathan Kent, now officially known as Superman, travels into California during a catastrophic wildfire in Superman: Son of Kal-El #1. Firefighters evacuate the citizens but the heat is so severe that the tires are melting. He flies in and, with the help of the firefighters, puts out the fire long enough to rescue the citizens. As he flies past the flames, Superman muses, “Firefighters stated this is a once-in-a-hundred-year fire”. “Seems like we get those every year now,” he says, referring to the area’s decade of record-breaking heat. He is concerned about the growing threat of climate change.

Although a metahuman youngster who is unable to manage their pyrokinetic abilities started the fire, he recognizes that the entire region was already a tinderbox (and the military’s attack on the metahuman didn’t help matters either). The climate change tale will continue in the future, with events in DC’s Future State. In Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #2, Superman reveals that humanity’s stubborn blindness to climate change came dangerously near to destroying the Earth. Because of his increased abilities, Superman was able to detect every degree of warmth and minute shift in the planet’s atmosphere. Earth was on the verge of extinction, and Superman, shockingly, was powerless to stop it. He claims that it was humanity who, in their most desperate hour, altered their ways and brought about a utopia.

It’s crucial to remember that the stories in Future State were all hypothetical situations; Superman’s and the DC universe’s futures aren’t set in stone. Nonetheless, the threat of climate change is real. Superman is well aware of how tough it will be to tackle it; Batman’s son Damien Wayne informs Jonathan that it isn’t a problem that a punch cannot solve Jonathan lacks Clark Kent’s expertise, he shares at least one trait with his father; he will never give up on Earth or its people.
