Toblerone, the exclusively Swiss-made chocolate, will now start the production outside of its Swiss homeland. The iconic triangle chocolate was first made in 1908 in the factory owned by the Tobler family. Currently, the chocolate bar is exclusively produced in Bern. However, an increase in the demand has resulted in the firm taking this decision.
Mondelez will be reportedly starting its new factory outlet in Slovakia by 2023. It said that “Bern is an important part of our history and will continue to be so in the future.”
“For legal reasons, the changes we’re bringing to our products require us to adjust our packaging to comply with the Swiss law, particularly to remove the word ‘Switzerland’ from the packaging front,” it added.
Toblerone produces 7 billion chocolate bars each year
Mondelez International reportedly stated that it would continue investing in the Bern plant, “the homeland of Toblerone”. Toblerone makes seven billion chocolate bars each year. Interestingly, 97 percent of those are shipped to more than 120 nations. In duty-free shops at airports throughout the world, every two seconds there is a purchase of one bar, according to Mondelez.
Some people in Switzerland found the relocation difficult to accept. This was because they were sad to see a beloved national emblem leave the country. Especially, one that featured the city of Bern’s bear symbol and the beautiful Matterhorn peak on its packaging. Furthermore, the Swiss daily Le Temps placed Toblerone on a list of famous products no longer made just in Switzerland, along with Ovaltine, Milka chocolate, and Sugus sweets.
