Tottenham Hotspur sack manager Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham Hotspur has sacked manager Nuno Espirito Santo, the Premier League club announced on Monday, after a 3-0 loss to Manchester United. Nuno Santo had signed a two-year contract as Jose Mourinho’s replacement in June. But his tenure lasted just beyond four months and a total of only 17 games. Nuno’s coaching staff have also been relieved of their duties. The club has not yet announced a replacement.

A Spurs statement said: “The club can today announce that Nuno Espirito Santo and his coaching staff Ian Cathro. A further coaching update will follow in due course.”

Spurs had topped the Premier League standings in August after winning their opening three games. But since then they aren’t in the best of touch. The defeat against Manchester United on Saturday was their fifth loss in seven league games. They are eighth in the Premier League and 10 points behind table leaders Chelsea.

Antonio Conte and Paolo Fonseca are among the names rumoured to be in the frame to replace Nuno. Spurs will next play a home game against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Spurs managing director of football Fabio Paratici added: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed. And I regret that we have had to take this decision. Nuno Santo is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”
