In 2021, Toyota Motor Corp. outsold General Motors Co. in the United States. Thereby, marking the first time since 1931 that the Detroit automaker did not lead U.S. auto sales.

Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States in 2021. General Motors delivered 2.218 million, according to the automakers.

GM’s 2021 sales in the United States were down 13%, while Toyota’s were up 10%. GM sold 2.55 million vehicles in the United States in 2020, compared to 2.11 million for Toyota and 2.04 million for Ford.

Toyota

It’s also the first time in American history that a non-domestic automaker has topped the rankings.

Toyota was able to improve its supply chain management, allowing it to dethrone GM for the first time in 90 years. A persistent shortage of semiconductor chips resulted in plant closures on an irregular basis. Thus, resulting in record-low vehicle inventories in the year 2021.

According to data from industry newspaper Automotive News, General Motors has been the leading seller of vehicles in the United States since 1931, when it surpassed Ford Motor.

Toyota, on the other hand, has dethroned General Motors as America’s top-selling automaker in 2021. Hence, making it the country’s top automaker in 2021.
