Istanbul [Turkey], April 17 (ANI): The succulent kebab, dear to many foodies, almost made it to space on the first anniversary of the 61st anniversary of the first human space flight.
A restaurant owner in Turkey tied helium balloons on a tray containing the cooked meat dish and set it afloat after attaching a GoPro camera to the contraption to record the flight.
A video of the entire ‘flight to space’ his celebration has gone viral on the Internet, despite the attempt failing. The ‘kebab’s flight’ was attempted on April 12, the International Day of Human Space Flight, to commemorate the day when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to complete one orbit of Earth in the year 1961.
The preparations were to the point, with side dishes of onion and salad accompanying the trendy ‘Adana kebab’. A Turkish flag accompanied the Kebab, which traces its origin to the city in southern Turkey.
“It cannot be launched without the Turkish flag,” a man at the “launch site,” said according to local media reports.
The long kebab made of hand-minced meat mounted on a wide iron skewer and placed in a special heat-proof box flew through the atmosphere as it was released, going as high as 40 kilometers well into the earth’s stratosphere before things took a different turn.
The Helium balloon exploded and the Kebab started dropping all the way down 40 kilometers to the earth, to land in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Dortyol city in Turkey.
The team of Kaburgaci Yasar restaurant retrieved the Kebab from the sea on Friday.
“This is a source of pride for Turkey, Adana, and the promotion of our kebab. We are very happy that we have successfully completed this project. We present this success to all of Turkey and Adana. Thank you…” the restaurant said.
Yasar Aydin, the restaurant owner who is also a chef says he had originally planned to launch his kebab into space during a recent festival in the city but unfavorable weather conditions delayed the launch, according to local Turkish media Daily Sabah.
Finally, with the assistance of local entrepreneur Idris Albayrak, a space engineering student, the chef was able to put into motion his idea.
“I think aliens sent it back because it had too much pepper. I will send a dish with less pepper next time,” Aydin was quoted as saying by local media as he retrieved the box.
The chef says he will continue with efforts to send the dish further up. (ANI)
