Mumbai: A 54-year-old chemist was killed in Maharashtra’s Amravati for allegedly making a social media post in support of suspended Bhartiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
Chemist Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe was stabbed to death in Amravati on June 21, a week before two men hacked to death Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, and later posted a video claiming responsibility for the same.
Local BJP leaders submitted a letter to police over the murder of Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, alleging that he was killed to “take revenge and set an example”.
According to India today, police said they have received the letter from BJP leaders and are investigating the matter. An FIR has been lodged and six people have been arrested in connection with the case, police stated.
“Kolhe ran a medical store in Amravati city. He had allegedly shared a post on some WhatsApp groups in support of Nupur Sharma for her comments made on a live Tv debate. He even shared the post in a WhatsApp group in which some Muslims were also members, including his customers,” an official of the City Kotwali police station informed PTI.
The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad team is in Amravati to investigate the matter. According to a source in the ATS, they are investigating whether there is any terror angle in the case. The ATS is also investigating whether there is a modus Operandi as the Udaipur accused.
According to sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs, an NIA team has reached Amravati and is likely to take over the investigation. The team is examining the matter and taking details from the Maharashtra Police.
The incident took place around 10 pm and 10.30 pm on June 21, when Kolhe was going home on a two-wheeler after closing his shop, he said, adding that his son Sanket (27) and wife Vaishnavi were accompanying him in a different vehicle.
The official further said, “When all of them reached near Mahila College’s gate, two motorcycle-borne men came from behind and blocked Kolhe’s path. A youth alighted from the motorcycle and stabbed Kolhe on his neck with a sharp weapon and escaped from the spot. Kolhe collapsed on the road in a pool of blood. Sanket rushed him to a hospital, where he died.”
Meanwhile, The Supreme court yesterday said ” BJP leader Nupur Sharma should apologize to the “whole country” and that she is “single-handedly responsible” for what has been happening in the nation as a result of her comments on the Prophet Muhammad, which have caused significant outrage among Gulf nations and nationwide protests.”
