As per the order, the interim bail will begin on December 23 and Umar Khalid will have to surrender on December 30

New Delhi: On December 12, a Delhi Court granted bail to Umar Khalid for seven days to attend his sister’s wedding. Umar Khalid is behind the bars since September 2020. Delhi Police arrested Umar Khalid in the Delhi Riots case. He is charged with the stringent UAPA over allegations of a “larger conspiracy” to provoke riots.

As per the order, the interim bail will begin on December 23 and Umar Khalid will have to surrender on December 30.

Earlier on October 18, the dismissed Umar Khalid’s bail plea. The bench had reserved its decision on September 9. Umar Khalid had moved to the Delhi HC after he was denied bail by the trial court on March 24.  He has been booked under several provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Arms Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act in Delhi Police’s ‘larger conspiracy case’ of the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

The Delhi High Court had noted that the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the 2020 North-East Delhi riots were presumptively planned at a number of conspiratorial meetings that Khalid attended, and that the accusations against him are presumptively true and that an embargo under UAPA is attracted.

Umar Khalid, a student activist, and Khalid Saifi, a member of United Against Hate, were cleared earlier this month in one of the charges connected to the 2020 Delhi riots by Delhi’s Karkardooma court. In this case, the two were released on bail, although they continue to be detained in connection with other crimes. Umar Khalid and Khalid Saifi are being held in detention after being charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
