Anandi Gopal is a Marathi film based on the life of Dr. Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, the first Indian female to become a doctor. The story of this drama movie revolves around the struggles Anandi had to face to become a doctor as in that era education for a girl was considered prohibited by society.

While no one was willing to let her study, her husband supported her to the very end so that she could get educated and become self-dependent. This biographical film won the hearts of many and inspires a lot of people even today.

Anandi Gopal Movie Plot

Born in 1865, Yamuna was a common girl who was cherished by her parents but was not allowed to study which was not acceptable to her fiance. He wanted her to study as this was his second marriage after his previous wife’s demise who also liked education.

So he wanted to educate Yamuna who after her marriage was named Anandi. He gave her several books and other study materials so that she can educate herself. He did everything in his power to make his wife a well-educated person regardless of what society thought of a woman being educated. 

Naturally, her parents weren’t on board with his plans for their daughter and her mother even went as far as to burn her books which actually made the husband Gopalrao really angry. 

She put all of her effort into learning everything that was on the study materials. Later on, they went to another town together where she continued her education. Doing daily household alongside studies was actually getting pretty heavy for her and Gopalrao noticed that and took all of that burden on his own shoulder and started to do all the household chores himself. 

Very soon Anandi gave birth to her first child and the couple was very happy but that didn’t become a stopping point for Anandi’s education. But this happiness didn’t last too long as their child didn’t survive for too long. 

This event triggered a new fire inside her as she thought that if she were educated enough then she would have foreseen the symptoms of illness in her child and prevented the tragedy. 

She then decided that she would dedicate her life to becoming a doctor who can save lives. This story of the movie revolves around such struggles she had to face until she successfully became a doctor.
