The main storyline of Agga Bai Sasubai which revolves around a daughter-in-law’ rapport with her mother-in-law is very progressive in nature. Shubhra (Tejashree Pradhan) plays the role of a cupid in her mother-in-law’s love story. The story touches upon the concept of remarriage and several other unconventional points. Apart from this, another aspect that is quite progressive on the show is that it defies stereotypical gender roles and we’d like to elaborate on the same.

Here are 5 instances that make us think the family-drama defies stereotypical gender roles:

1. Shubhra’s ‘full name’

Earlier on the show when Ajoba asked Shubhra to tell her full name, she said ‘Shubhra Anil Asha Kamat’. Ajoba looked quite surprised with her response following which she told him that she takes both her parents’ names while saying her full name. Now, this isn’t conventional, right? Especially since we as a society are used to including our father’s name in our full names.

2. Marriage ‘proposal’

Don’t we typically see guys getting on their knees and popping the question? Well in the case of Agga Bai Sasubai, Shubhra was the one who ‘proposed’ her marriage with Soham to Asawari. She hilariously barged into Soham’s apartment and told Asawari that she wants to marry her son.

3. Not so ‘dutiful’ wife

Unlike other daily soaps, this family drama does not believe in having ‘dutiful wives’ who support their husbands despite their misdoings. Both Shubhra and Asawari do not hesitate in correcting their respective husbands when they are wrong.

4. Abhijit’s take on cooking

The formerly famous celebrity chef Abhijit Raje firmly believes in gender equality. He believes that cooking is something everyone can do irrespective of their gender. More often than not, women are associated with cooking for their family but on the show, both Abhijit and Asawari enjoy cooking and there’s so much we can learn from them.

5. Stay-at-home wife and working husband? Nope.

Again, unlike other family dramas where the ‘bahus’ have to stay at home while their husbands go to work, in Agga Bai Sasubai both Shubhra and Soham work. In fact, there comes a point where Soham is jobless and Shubhra is singlehandedly supporting the family.
