Abanindranath Tagore, who was born in 1871 in Jorasanko, Kolkata, was a great Indian painter and author. A true artist in every sense of the word, Abanindranath Tagore created the Indian Society of Oriental art, and was its principal contributor. Also known fondly as Aban Thakur, he wrote many children’s books like Khirer Putul, Buro Angla, Rajkahini, and Nalak, which are landmarks in Bengali literature, and delight kids enormously even to this day!

Abanindranath Tagore came from a long lineage of high intellect and art. He was the revered Bard Rabindranath Tagore’s nephew, so it is no surprise that he produced such fine literature and art, and left a rich cultural legacy himself. Abanindranath Tagore studied at Sanskrit College and the Calcutta School of Art. He developed a unique style, and believed that Western art tended to be rather materialistic in nature. Abanindranath Tagore ascribed to more Swadeshi values, and founded the Bengal school of art which went on to pave the way for the modern Indian style of painting.

Here is a painting by Abanindranath Tagore, which is titled ‘Departure of Siddhartha’:

The element of fantasy and magic was a recurring theme in Abanindranath Tagore’s works, as we can see. The painting below is called ‘Bharat Mata,’ and reflects his affinity towards native subjects and styles.
