From refusing to be called a supporting actor in ZNMD, to raising his voice against patriarchy, Abhay Deol is one opinionated actor we have in Bollywood. He turns 45 on 15 March 2021.

Abhay Deol turns 45 on 15 March 2021 and we certainly believe he is ageing like fine wine. The Line of Descent actor is often seen voicing his opinion through his social media handles. Whether it is talking about racism in fairness cream ads, calling out chauvinist culture being promoted in Bollywood or raising his voice against patriarchy, Abhay Deol has proved it time and again that he is an artist with a voice. In fact, he even refused to be addressed as a supporting actor in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and made his stance very clear.

Check out Abhay Deol’s class apart performance in Line of Descent here:

While the actor has raised his voice on several occasions and constantly supported many causes, here are some of the top incidents:

Supporting Farmer Protests

Abhay Deol is a feminist and supports the idea wholeheartedly. In this post, he’s seen appreciating the courageous ladies for speaking up in support of the farmers’ protest going on in the country. Earlier he had also shared a post pointing out the best part about the movement being that people are united in this irrespective of their religion, caste, class, etc.

Calling Out Bollywood

Abhay has called out Bollywood on several occasions. While sharing this illustration, the actor tries to convey the message that a ‘NO’ does not mean ‘convince me’, unlike how it is projected in Bollywood films. Earlier he was also heard saying how stalking is being promoted in Bollywood as a means to woo a girl.

Raising Voice Against Patriarchy

When a few Bollywood names came out in support of Rhea Chakraborty and called her arrest an act of patriarchy, even Abhay Deol stood by the notion. Apart from this, the actor has been spotted talking about the patriarchy in Bollywood earlier as well, whether it’s about the kind of roles women play or the pay gap between male and female artists.

Regressive Message In Raanjhana

When pointed out by someone in a post regarding his movie Raanjhana, the actor condemned the kind of regressive message that was shown in the film. Rather than defending his own release, he accepted the mistake and conveyed how sorry he was.

Thoughts On Nepotism and Casteism

While Abhay Deol is the nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra, the former has made a name for himself in Bollywood based on the kind of eccentric films he has done. As the topic of nepotism made headlines after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, Abhay addressed the issue calling it a ‘tip of the iceberg’. As he pointed out that it’s prevalent everywhere, the actor also added that caste aka jaat plays a major role in determining how that works out for everyone.

On Why Devdas Shouldn’t Be Glorified

While calling the character of Devdas ‘a chauvinist, a misogynist, entitled, and arrogant,’ Abhay spoke about how the women in the story were much more independent and had integrity. He said he was completely against glorifying Devdas and how a man like him deserves to be loved by the girl no matter what he does.

Stance On Being Termed As A Supporting Actor for ZNMD

Talking about the lobbying that’s prevalent in Bollywood, Abhay said how the award functions demoted him and Farhan to being called ‘supporting actors’ for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. To make his disapproval very clear, the actor refused to be nominated in that category. He also boycotted award shows to prove his stance.

Raising Voice For Migrants And Minorities

When the whole of Bollywood was seen raising their voice for #BlackLivesMatter, Abhay Deol addressed these ‘woke’ celebrities while asking them to raise their voice for the downtrodden in their country as well.
